DS I's Magnetic Field?

I did a search for "magnetic field" in this forum and did not find what I was looking for, so sorry if it is out there.

Anywho, does anybody know/have an idea of what the mgnetic field did on the DS I? I am refereing to the one that the x-wings has to pass through before the end battle where they had to put deflectors on double front.

My thought were either some sort of field that made a small atmosphere for the DS I (then I thought that they would not need the magnetic field on the individual landing bays).

or

A field that would protect it from radiation and cosimic wind type of stuff (that came from me watching the Core lately. I know you guys don't like the movie but...). So any thought?

Well, it is a massive moon sized chunk of metal. Perhaps it was just generating a magnetic field on its own, akin to a planet's? The abnormal strength could be due to the station being made largely of ferrous metal, unlike a planet. Then again, if that was it, then the fighters wouldn't have "passed through" the field, since the field would only get stronger the closer they got to the station. Hmmm.

Might be something to deflect micrometeors or whatnot.

Dr. Saxton has a excellent hypothesis in his Technical Commentaries:

EDIT: Look under "Magnetosphere?".

Oh thank a lot. :D That confirms my "Core" theory.
