I'm sure somebody will blow this out of the water and will probably not be confirmed by Episode III, but what if the so-called "Corporate Sector" was actually just what happened to the Trade Federation (and other corporations like the Commerce Guild, Banking Clan, etc), post Clone-Wars?

It's been officially stated by Lucasfilm that all the organisations within the Confederacy get absorbed into the Empire when it's established. That's why they're never heard from again.

I believe this is mentioned in the Episode III Spoiler Thread, and in the "Just the Facts" section on TheForce.Net.

The Corporate Sector, which is a specific region of space, is completely unrelated to the Conferacy, and IIRC, was actually founded several decades before the Empire.

I think the Trade Federation was an exclusively Nemoidian entity as well, whereas the Corporate Sector is made up of several different megaconglomerates.

The Neimoidians were actually the elite within the Trade Federation: it wasn't exclusive to them.

I read on the databanks over at SW.com that Muunilist (headquarters for the IGBanking Clan), was still one of the main places for commerce and money in the Empire. Not sure of the Caln was still around, but apparently the Empire, and the IR, took great care of it.

It wasn't around at the time of the Empire. As I said, all members of the Confederacy were absorbed into the Empire when it rose to power.

The Corporate Sector in it's form post Episode 3 is the brainchild of several mega-corporations under the Tagge family.

It's a region of space with approximately 10,000 inhabitable but uninhabited by sentients planets (actually IIRC, there were 7 the corperations didn't report to the Empire).

The Corporate Sector's deal with the Empire was basically, the CS gets lease to it all, to develop as they see fit, but something like 15% of all profits must go into the Imperial coffers directly.

This let the Emperor see the area developed and no expense or risk to the Empire, but to get a section of the profits.

And if the CS ever got stupid, well, that's what the Imperial war machine is for.
