In order to gain control of a whole galaxy where strong resistance is expected, what forces would the empire be able to commit in the timeframe shortly after The Empire Strikes Back and without the Rebel Alliance becoming too big of a nuisance?

In adittion to this, how many sith/dark jedi would Palpatine be able to muster? Who would be placed in charge of the operation? Would Thrawn be recalled from the Unknown Regions?

IIRC around the TESB time period Thrawn isn't in the Unknown Regions.

Well the Empire could easily muster 2-3 thousands ISDs with thousands of support vessels. However, doing so would require ISDs to be taken off of their normal duties, but even then, the Empire could build (as MW has said in the past), 7,000 ISDs in a couple months. Thrawn is a good man for the job, Darth Vader would be good as well (since he is evil). As for the sith, not sure about that.

He's an Admiral at that point IIRC; his promotion came after GA Zaarin mutined (SP?), at least if I'm remembering the TIE Fighter storyline correctly.

EDIT - Presuming Zaarin doesn't go mutineer, I could see him being put in charge.

Around this time there are two "habitation spheres' in construction around Coruscant, however, they are "mini" death stars that were not even finished by the time of RotJ. As for superlaser tech, these "mini" death stars were equipped with superlasers.



Look under "Coruscant".

Concept art is not really proof, well in my book, but that pic of the Death Stars come from The Illustrated Guide to the SW Universe. They lable them as "habitation spheres" built for "peacetime purposes".

No. The caption is an in "in universe" article about Imperial Centre written by Pollux Hax, a professional Imperial propagandist. The description "habitation sphere" is a delightfully vague description which implies that they are purely civilian in function, but never actually says that they are not basically Überartillery pieces for the purpose of obliterating planets -- all while done in the absence of a declared state of war.

During the comics, they built a weapon platform called 'The Eye of Tarkin' between ESB and RoTJ. Just a big superlaser covered in armor and Turbolasers (probably were Kevin J Anderson got the idea for the Darksaber)

Actually, it was just called the Tarkin. I believe that it was a superlaser with a Super Star Destroyer hull built around it.

I think you mean "Eye of Palaptine"? The Tarkin battlestation was just called Tarkin according the Sharky.
