Favorite/least favorite SW Ships in X-Wing-Series Games

Post by Thunderfire »

Favorite:

1. Gunboat - great durability & fire power. It is also a good
dogfighter for a heavy fighter.
2. Tie-Advanced - great speed and manuverability. It lacks
a bit in the durability depertment.
3. Assault Shuttle -Lot's of guns. A tough opponent for light
fighters.

Dislike:

1. X-Wing - Less manuverability & acceleration , half the durability
& firepower compared to the gunboat. The X-Wing should have a
much better manuverabilty in the games.
2. Tie-Defender - a way to strong compared to other fighters. A typical
newbie craft.
3. ISD2 - Pathetically easy to kill. The bridge area is nearly undefended.
Anyone can kill ths one in less than 10 minutes with a Tie-Fighter.

Are you kidding me? It's slow as a pig, making several missions where you need to use its ion cannons to disable targets a BITCH. It takes way too long to become proficient enough to kill A-Wings in this thing.
2. Tie-Advanced - great speed and manuverability. It lacks
a bit in the durability depertment.
Agree. Well-balanced craft- but when an advanced missile is coming your way you know it could be all over if you don't dodge just right.
3. Assault Shuttle -Lot's of guns. A tough opponent for light
fighters.
And heavy fighters. In the X-Wing Alliance mission where you first go up against them, killing them in the Y-Wing is quite the chore.

No way. It's a classic. While it has less firepower, the Gunboat is a slow POS compared to it. The four lasers do me just fine.

Too strong? You ok there? :)
3. ISD2 - Pathetically easy to kill. The bridge area is nearly undefended. Anyone can kill ths one in less than 10 minutes with a Tie-Fighter.
Every capital ship is pathetically easy to kill IMO. Their weaponry is both far too sparse and exposed- you can scour the hull of weapons then blast away at your leisure... pathetic.

Favorite:

1. Missile Boat. Whether you think it's uber cool or for wank fest n00bs, you've got to have at least some respect for this craft.

2. Imperial Shuttle. Man, I just fucking love that thing! the XWAU model makes it all the better.

3. Supa Fighter. A pretty good craft and it actually looks cool too.

4. B-Wing. Just always had a soft spot for it.

Least Favorite:

1. A-Wing. Always has been an uber-wank craft. Unless of course it just happens to be you whose flying it; then its just crap.

2. Gunboat. I can't do jack shit in this.

3. Winged Calamari Cruiser. Has got to be the most unbalanaced cap ship in the whole game. The only capship to have non-exposed sheild generators in the game. And all NR fans are wankers.

4. Missile Boat (for aesthetics). Unless you get the XWAU model it's ass-ugly, and even then it could use a curve or two. The X-Wing was never the best looking but it was still cool looking, but it looks downright elegant next to the Missile Boat.

Like:

-TIE Fighter: my all-time favorite. Fast, maneuverable, and very hard to hit. Twin central lasers allow more accuracy.
-TIE Interceptor: faster but the profile is too large: you have to try never to have ships on your sides. Plus the beams are too separated (read X-Wing). Stylish.
-A-Wing: weak but the equivalent to imperial fighters (maybe even faster)

Dislike:
-X-Wing: the cannons on the wings suck, it's very hard to hit a TIE with all four simultaneous shots. The distance between the guns makes them go AROUND targets. Also it's too big of a target (at least it can dodge ok)
-Y-Wing: don't really have to explain
-TIE Defender: huge, unless there are other targets it's fucked. If it weren't for all that shielding, it would be destroyed in seconds. Butt-ugly.
-Assault Gunboat: slow, but I suppose it's the only ship that can fire Ion cannons before the TIE/D. Shielding is pretty good but not as strong as Defender I think. Huge target.

Neutral:
-TIE Bomber. gets the mission done. Very bad fighter. Still, in the hands of a skilled pilot (me) still can kick a lot of ass. At least it's not such a big target.
-B-Wing: good bomber/fighter. pretty.
-TIE/Advanced: interesting variant of the Interceptor, but I've never found shielding that necessary.

NOTE: I find shields on TIEs are more useful as an alternate power source for lasers.

Fav fighters and craft.

A-Wing: Fast, agile, and it carries missiles. Its guns do run out easier then an X-Wing, but with just a little skill you can mow through unshielded Ties

X-Wing: Relatively well ballanced fighter. 4 guns for fighting against both shielded and unshielded craft. Fair sized missile launching system but can't carry as many concussions as the A-Wing

B-Wing: When you want to kill something, this is the beast to do it. Large torpedo capacity, linked weaponry will tear through anything short of a capship, flying smartly you can kill Capships quickly with the torpedoes and followup guns.

Tie-Avenger: Fast, lots of guns, etc... Its more or less a cross between an X-Wing and A-Wing. While good though, its not to absurd. Not the wankfest like the Tie-Defender

Assault Gunaboat: Heavyily shielded, lots of warheads, and fair weapon loadout. Also first hyperspace capable Imperial fighter. Well layed out, good assault craft and when piloted by a skilled pilot you can go against more manueverable craft.

Tie-Interceptor: Quick, agile, and its got 4 guns. Sure its not shielded, but with a skilled pilot you can take on most other fighters with a fair chance of survival.

Assault Transport: In XWA when you hack this thing and fly it you got 2 forward guns and then 2 turrets of two guns each. It can defend itself against fighters at all angles, and when the guns are linked you can tear through even light capital ships.

Disliked Craft:

Tie-Defender: This was the product of a game of one-upsmanship. It has no real readon to have been built. The Avenger already outclassed just about anything the Rebels had, this thing was just made for plot in a game. Way to fast, way to many guns, and just really BAD.

Missile Boat: Sure, the Tie-Defender was bad, but when the Empire is dumbenough to LOOSE the T-D they got to come up with something even BETTER

Tie-Bomber: Weak as hell, small weapon payload, easy to kill, slow, not very manueverable... What are this things high points anyway?

Strike Cruiser: Not many guns, not much armor or shields, and one really STUPID blind spot.

ISD-II old version: Come on, the bridge area is WAY to easy to attack and those shield generators are rather easy to kill. At least they had newer versions without this problem.

I rather liked the assault gunboat. The fact that it had a hyperdrive, decent shields, a multimission profile with it's missile racks, and ions as well as lasers, made it a very flexible craft. And it's made by the same people who made the Lambda, and has those funky fold-up wings. :) Normally I like light, fast, and full-of-fight (but not A-wing 'light') but the assault gunboat was my favorite craft.

I kind of liked the Y-wing, too. Yeah, it's a pig; yeah, it's slower than molasses, but it's got it's own charm. Besides, the design is pretty classic. It's kind of like a WW2 warbird. Granted, if given the choice between a Y-wing and a B-wing....

I didn't really like the missile boat. That was pretty clearly a one-trick pony. Load up with adv conc missiles all you want, but as soon as you run out, you are dead in the water with nothing to show for it but a single laser. I have a soft spot for them because that was the bird flown by my flight when I was in Emperor's Hammer, but in that role it would be a major mission fire support craft, not an independantly-deployed fighter. I would *not* mind an element of these things orbiting a battlefield or ready to drop some proton smackdown on an enemy capship at the right time. It does not, however, make sense to me to fly a missile boat in a solo mission.

Like:
1. X-wing: Cool, well balanced fighter
2. TIE Fighter and Interceptor: Extremely underrated, these were two extremely fast fighters that were hard as hell to hit. I actually found them to be a lot more deadly than the Assault Gunboat.
3. Victory Star Destroyer: With two missile launchers this thing was hard to take down, even more so than ISDs. The mission where you have to destroy the Protector is extremely hard when it shoots 2 Advanced Missiles at once.
4. Assault Transport: Bigger, badder version of the standard stormtrooper transport, this thing had so much weapons it was used it was often used as a straight anti-capship torpedo boat. I loved the mission where 20 of these things hyper in and blow the shit out of an ISD.
5. Escort Shuttle: The game's version of the militarized Lambda, these things looked awesome and were deadly when you had to fly unshielded TIEs against them. Red Knight Squadron was also cool.
6. TIE Defender: Yeah it was overpowered as hell, but this thing kicked ass. It had the fastest normal speed in the game, and its wide variety of weapons gave it unmatched versatility.
7. Missile Boat: Blowing away entire fleets of capships was fun, albeit unrealistic.

Dislike:
1. Y-wing: Slow POS, dogfighting TIEs was a bitch.
2. TIE Bomber: Lucasarts chose to make this a jack of all trades fighter, rather than the specialized pure bomber it really is. It wasn't even good at bombing, carrying only as much torpedoes as an X-wing and lacking shields.
3. Container Transport: This thing was ugly.
4. TIE Fighter's version of the Mon Cal Cruiser: Ugly, I wished they used the MC80s from the movies.
5. A-wing: This thing had the speed, but its shields were way too powerful. Its slow cannon recharge rate was also a pain in the ass.

It just doesn't fit with the game. Espeically with the fact that the whole main advantage of the Rebellion was that they had better fighters.

Suddenly the Empire has Tie-Avengers, then almost instantly they have Tie-Defenders, but they LOOSE them almost instantly and have to build Missile Boats and then LOOSE that almost instantly as well. Then suddenly the things are so freaking valuable that they can't actually USE them and god forbid just write down the blueprints and BUILD them.

Best:

TIE Avenger: I love quad lasers. Some find it awkward- but I've been playing these games since X-Wing came out in 1993 (I was 12 at the time) and I'm well used to it by now. Shields, maneuverability and speed make this an excellent fighter. Plus, it looks awesome. Fragility means skill required.

TIE Defender: uber-ship. Nuff said. Not as satisfying as TIE Avenger though.

X-Wing: I love quad lasers.

Worst:

TIE Bomber: flying target. The worst of the worst. Replace them with Missile Boats please.

Y-Wing: not only is it a piece of shit to fly, the amount of times I've had a mission failed in TIE Fighter from them fucken slamming into me ... with that FUCKING FART noise their engine makes in TIE Fighter just before I die ...

The Sabra: piece of crap.

Screw the Missile Boat, just replacing them with Assault Gunboats would have given you double the torpedoes, greater topspeed, Ions along with lasers, more armor, STRONG shields, more manueverability...

Just imagine how well the Empire might have done against the Rebellion had ISDs been equiped with 4 squadrons of Interceptors, 1 of Avengers, and 1 of Assault Gunboats.

X-Wing
No way. It's a classic. While it has less firepower, the Gunboat is a slow POS compared to it. The four lasers do me just fine.

X-Wing speed 100
Gunboat speed 90
not that much faster. The Gun can use a beam weapon this means
it's absolute top speed is higher. X-Wings loose to Y-Wings in the
game. This says alot about their combat ability... The Gun is one
of the top fighter in XWA performance wise. Only the T/A , B-Wing,
T/D and missile boat are better.

X-Wing: Just a nice classic craft...good dogfighter when it has a good payload.

Y-Wing...f'n pig slug.

TIE Bomber: Slug WITHOUT SHIELDS?!!

I have a serious soft spot for Corellian craft. The YT 2000 is a awesome craft that has a good balence of weapons and shields. By manipulating the power settings, she can be fast too.

When its time to dog fight, you can't beat the X wing. Durable, with four cannons and decent shields. And just incase you have the torpedoes.

Some missions take the A wing, witch is good when you have to close in and destroy a target quickly. I use them to recon a target ie, bypass enemy fighters and swoop in on a target delievering their missile payload then turn around and engage the fighters.

The ones I don't like are the cap ships, while in XWA they look really nice especialy ISD's but their weapons capability is shit. I know they downgraded the capships to make it so you can kill one, but I think it would have been funner if you had to seriously dodge the things or if you had to engage them, it is a suicide type mission.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

I have the X-wing set of games, and

Fav- XWing/AWing/Ywing
I hate the B-Wing, get my ass shot off every time. Ywing works just fine

Gunships are easy to kill with the X, a pain to kill with the A.
T/A are the hardest targets, I really hate having to fight them.
Ties and Ints are easy enough to kill no matter what ship you use.

Dislikes:

TIE Bomber, a slow lumbering target. For its payload it just ain't worth it.

TIE/D, all thsoe experimental TIE droids are about the dumbest concepts I've ever seen...and they're pathetically easy to kill.

Y-Wings, almost as bad as TIE Bombers, only reedeming quality is the shield and it ain;'t nearly reedeming enough.

Unmodified YT-1300, the second gun doesn't even fire at targets half the time (even when it has a LOS) and you don't have nearly enough speed and shields given your target profile. I hate facing Supras in these things, spekaing of which...

Supras, yet another slow and lumbering POS which, against a real fighter, is so much space debris because it can't even outmanuever freighters...christ.

I like the Missile Boat, TIE Defender, and the Otana. I DISLIKE the Assault Gunboat, the Y-Wing, and the TIE Bomber.

And yes, once you start flying the Falcon and the grandeur wears off, you realize that it would be better if it were the Otana/an A-Wing.

Anyone else, having played the games, think that the X-Wing is overrated? It's like a jack of all trades, but master of none. It's great compared to the Y-Wing (it has greater effective firepower, in the game), but it sucks compared with any of the other ships, like a B-Wing or an A-Wing or the late-model TIE's.

The X-Wing is good in groups and in a fair sized furball. Its lasers are good and you can hunt down targets. But when you really need to kill something, I prefer the A-Wing. In XvT there was a mission where you go against steadily better and better enemies and more of them. I could never beat every wave with the X-Wing. But when I hopped in the A-Wing I could keep a speed of 90 while having both the shields and guns recharging.

The B-Wing gives you massive firepower and with linked weapons you can kill almost anything instantly. Then lets not forget the torpedo loadout.

And as I said before, the Assault Gunboat is better then the Y-Wing in almost every way. Its not quite as good a bomber as the B-Wing, but it makes an excelent assault craft and has decent anti-fighter capabilities (espeically when armed with missiles).
