I know I'm in the minority here, but it's always bothered me that Brian Daley felt the need to attach a notable significance to the red stripe on the trousers that Han wore in ANH (when Daley wrote the Han Solo Adventures back in 1979).
It also begs the question of what the yellow stripe on his trousers in TESB were supposed to signify. Cowardice?

There's 2 ranks of Bloodstripe, the lesser yellow and the greater red. Han has won both.

The Herald of Chaos is never in the minority! Overuse of detail is just another part of the EU silliness... just like how it seems everyone's been to Tatooine

Well, a lot of people that are mentioned in the EU are in less than legal occupations and Tatooine is one of the major hubs of organized crime and general lawlessness. It's not entirely suprising a lot of ruffians have passed through there at one time or another.

Han wore the red blood stripes after he got them and up until the events of ANH, about 2 years ago some kid wrote to SW Insider about why he changes and the reason is that after the ordeal at Ord Mantel he changed the pants colors to the less noticble yellow "bloodstripe"

I dont think the diffrence in color means diffrent aliens. the Yellow Bloodstripe is the Second class, Red being the 1st. Somewhat like how Gold is more important than silver.

Consider it like 1930s Cuba - a nice, safe haven for the mob. Not that far away, and run by a nice, friendly government. Although I hope they avoid it in Episode 3 - its been turned from a desert town into Grand Central Station.
Of course, I'm still praying for decent acting, plot, and script, so I might as well load up my wish list - I also should buy a lottery ticket - I'll have better odds of winning the big prize.
