What are the thoughts of stardestroyer.net's forum's denizens on this series?

As a series it has been fairly weak. The plot devices are stretched, it is marginally inconsistent (though not much more than any of the other SW books. The problem is that a series is expected to have consistency, and the NJO is no more consistent than normal), the characters are only fair to good, and there really isn't much re-readability. I'll, of course, continue to read it out of loyalty to the SW name, but I don't have to enjoy it all.

In order to make it a credible threat to the NR (and the Jedi in particular, something which according to rumours George himself wanted), without falling back into the 'Dark Jedi' cliche, the writers gave us a species which were using bio-tech
, were Jedi strong
, were Jedi fast
, and are blind/invicible to the Force
. Basically they took all the 'truths' in the Star Wars universe and discarded them
. They are insalting. Example; the YV aren't apart of the force, but then again neither are inanimate objects like rock's and droids, but the Jedi don't have any difficulty with those, because the Force still penetrates them. But for some reason when facing a YV warrior, a Jedi can't touch them with the Force (actually they can is some books and not in others, which brings up the whole continuity thing)! WTF?
These YV are Jedi fast and strong, hmmm a species that can move as fast as Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan the TPM? Sure.... Here's another thing the writers have let us down with, so what if the Jedi can't use the Force to 'touch' the YV, they can still use the Force to 'enhance'
their abilities can't they? I mean we see examples of them doing to 'jump real high', but when, oh when, are we gonna see a Jedi just say; Fuck it. And then 'press' the fast forward button, and just slice the fuckers up?
Another thing that really angered me... It took till the 14th book of this terrible series for an authour to say; 'Hang on a tick, couldn't we just use orbital bombardment?'. For fucks sake, this series is being written by retards. And now for the 'organic-tech' rubbish: WTF are these dovin-slug things eating in hard space, when they are being deployed as mines? Could someone please answer this for me? And the fucking 'mini-black hole' crap they create? WTF? It would be just a danger to them as the it would be a defence. Think about it, it creates a black hole, say 1 kilometer away from it's self in order to stop an incoming attack. So far okay, fine and dandy, but why aren't they sucked into the sucker as well? Why aren't they, at the very leased, ripped out of the ship? Ahhhh!
I hate the entire series, for fucks sake I just hope that in the end some character 'sneezes' on the YV, they all get the common cold, which their immunes system can't deal with, and they and their entire organic-tech bullshit, dies out with them.
Don't even get me started as to how an outside galactic force with ZERO support base could just swoop in and take over, what is it now half? Quater of the galaxy?

What gets me is how Luke is acting like a puss because the NR have made a bio weapon that would wipe the vong out. give me a break forget the morals and kill em.

There where a few weak books, namely the first ones, the latter books are good though, I think the NJO is improving and so far it has three of the best books I've ever read, Rebel Dream, Rebel Stand and Traitor.

I personally like the Vong, they got organic tech but apart from that stupid gravity sensor thing I can buy it.
Their tech isn't superior either, infact I would say it's inferior as it should be, it's just that they got special tricks that make them very dangerous tactically.
On a fighter scale their void shields can take alot of damage compared to NR fighters, but they rely on intercepting, and they can be fooled and then there is only weak rock in the way and the fighter is gone.
They also have the disadvangate of feeling pain so damaged Vong vessels can't fight as good or long as NR or Ímperial vessels.
Their Yammosks give them incredible coordination which was responsible for the majority of their victories.
The crappy handling by the NR of the war up until now was also majorly responsible for the Vong's success.

It think the books as a whole have been a big disapointment. The whole Star Wars EU has really taken a nose dive since TPM. The prequel books have been poor, with the exception of Shadow Hunter. The New Jedi Order has been painful of a KJA level. There have been a few exceptions but they're too few and far between.
Unless some of my favorite EU authors decide to return then, I'm out. They've turned out too much crap to lure me back easily. NJO is onely the most overt example of the spiral into craplulence.

How long will the pain continue? After Episode III will the EU die? I damn well hope so.

What I mean is how it is written and distributed. It is a major undertaking with a stupid storyline that they have books coming out once every 4 months. You didn't see that before in the EU. They were lucky to release two a year. The NJO story is only ONE storyline. There aren't multiple stories going on in different eras. It's an addiction, you must read every book in order to keep up with the series. THAT is what I mean by that it was created only to make money.

I have only read 4 NJO books. Dark Tide 1&2, Rebel Stand, and Rebel Dream. Thats cause they are from the better SW writers.
Now... I have heard a rumor taht Zahn will write the last few NJO books. If this is true, then we can only hope that Zahn pulls it together in the end and writes some good stories. We already know Allston and Stackpole managed to write good books in a questionable series.

I agree. For the most part, the NJO has sucked. Still, the Allston books were good, and so was Star by Star. And I hope that Zahn will write some books.

I don't think that's any more than a rumor. I haven't seen anything with his name in the NJO info. I find it unlikely that he'd be willing to even touch that the gobbler with a ten foot pole. He's been pretty contemptous of a lot of the EU and it's less than stellar authors.
Supposedly, he's going to do some work in the prequel era. A trilogy or duology. Once NJO is wrapped up it seems that they intend to make more of a push for prequel era materials.

About the only author that Zahn has even bothered to acknowledge was Stackpole. Zahn took several of Stackpole's characters and managed to do a good job with them. Of course the fact that Stackpole and Zahn seem to know eachother, co-wrote some short stories, and Stackpole says next time they are in Tasmania that Stackpole gets to drive that time...
As I said before, Zahn, Stackpole, and Allston are the core writers of SW. They have written almost half of the entire EU.
More books by Zahn, even prequels would be nice. Means we might get to see more of Thrawn and Mara Jade.

I don't think so. Mara would just be an infant, she's a little younger than Luke. And Thrawn was still in the Unknown Regions. Zahn at least has respect for his own continuity.
But I'd still like to see whatever he has to write. He, Stackpole, Alliston, and Crispin are the only EU writers that could possibly lure me into reading the EU anymore.

I don't see why thats likeable, the EU contains shitload of good stuff, even the ones with crap stories contain good stuff when viewed from outside the story.
If it's just because you don't like the story, ok it's ok not to like a story or the book because it sucked, but even the worst books have good stuff in them, like in Crystal Star I believe we found some very good info on jedi powers, Jaina collecting molecules and making them move faster.
The best way is simply to avoid the crappy books.

I think it's a good storyline, brings some major change and an interesting new species to the SW story.

He is writing prequel era books. They'll likely tie up the back story to the Thrawn Trilogy with the new Prequel timeline.

Zahn is not writing in the NJO. Allston and Stackpole are both slightly above average writers. By far the best book of the series thusfar was Star by Star.
