The ASP Engine: We're making some... changes
I have been given some legal advice about the Star Wars project we are currently working on and are making some changes to it as a result. It is now to be called a research project to help my team and I in our universities studies, it will simulate space based combat using popular science fiction universes as its basis, starting with Star wars and (at some indeterminite point in the future) the other less interesting ones. Its emphasis will be on very advanced and realistic physics, graphics and AI simulations. A name for it is still not settled on but it will avoid the larger trademarks such as "Star Wars", the best name we have at the moment is the ASP Engine standing for Advanced Space Physics Engine. On a sidenote you can expect us to release the first technology demo within a couple of weeks.

Sounds interesting. Have you guys looked at Vegastrike and Orbiter yet? Vegastrike is an ope-souce space gaming engine which a moderately well-developed graphics engine and a rudamentary physics module. Orbiter is a closed source project but it implements fully realistic orbital mechanics and could come in handy for proofing orbital mechanics code.Aaron Ash wrote:A name for it is still not settled on but it will avoid the larger trademarks such as "Star Wars", the best name we have at the moment is the ASP Engine standing for Advanced Space Physics Engine.

Is your project going to be open source?

Ah, wonderful. I was hoping that you would find a way to deal with the legal implications before they became a problem. I have nothing against creating an ASP Engine and then 'testing' it with a some star wars ships, and I doubt LA, LFL, or whoever will take too much notice. Besides, you can mak a cool logo for it with a snake biting a spaceship in half. That is, if your engine will allow ships to be cut in half. I wouldn't want to get anyone overexcited.

Random thought. I wonder if anyone ever modded Panzer General I/II or better yet Peoples General for Star Wars ground combat?

I personally would love to see stuff from Jovian Chronicles coded into this engine. It shouldn't be too hard, the highest acceleration I've seen is slightly over 3g, and the designs are pretty cool http://www.dp9.com/Worlds/Jc_page4a.htm. Heck, my avatar's one of their designs, even if it is one of those impractical mechs .
Any chance of there being a way to scan images and input data to create ships in the game?

As long as you don't sell it I doubt it'd be an issue.MKSheppard wrote:My project is going to be called STAR WARS: THE GREAT NAVAL BATTLESAaron Ash wrote:I have been given some legal advice about the Star Wars project we are currently working on and are making some changes to it as a result.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."
