Anyone caught Star Wars on DVS Home Video?
Just out of curiosity, I grabbed Star Wars: A New Hope (THX enhanced) from my public library on DVS (Descriptive Video Service). On the box it says "Major Funding Provided by the US Department of Education").
DVS is a series of videos adapted for the visually impaired. A voice over during the movie describes various scenes (without muting the regular dialouge or sound effects).
I've also noticed the logo (the letter "D" with sound "waves" coming off of it) on a few DVD's. Sounds like an easy enough feature to add to movies, so long as its been recorded prior.
Anyway, kind of interesting, sort of like a radio drama of the movie itself.
I wonder how this would this stack up as "evidence" in the canon hierarchy? Since it's the movie itself with someone describing what you're watching as you watch it...
Example: The announcer describes a Star Destroyer as being "10 times it's size" (compared to the Blockade Runner). He describes the skeleton C3PO walks past on Tatooine as "50 feet long." etc.

History? I love history! First, something happens, then, something else happens! It's so sequential!! Thank you first guy, for writing things down!

I don't see how any of the descriptions would actually help, anyway. It's not like the guy is going to say "To the left is a 3999 bajillion volt generator and underneath that is Queen Amidala's grave" or anything of (debating) importance.

It probably doesn't matter, what matters is Spanky's boner over Star Wars canon authority. Now, care to explain why "No" is the be all end of this discussion oh great god Spanky?

A descriptive track for the blind is the same as Closed Captions for the deaf. They are inaccurate approximations and generalisations when compared to the film itself and its script. A DVS track would actually have even less status than CC, because it is less accurate and only tells you what's visually occuring on the screen.
In the old BT-16 thread, the participants came to the decision that CC had no status, since it was only an approximation of the dialogue. A DVS would be deduced to be at the same level.

I believe in a sign of Zeta.

True, but remember that VISUALS trump dialouge. ; )Spanky The Dolphin wrote:A descriptive track for the blind is the same as Closed Captions for the deaf. I've gotta get my hands on the ESB and ROTJ versions of these tapes though... imagine...
*my impression of if Curtis Saxton did the voice-over's*
"the amazing shields of the Falcon shrug off a 200 gigaton shot from the Imperial Star Destroyer!"
"an asteroid smashes into the bridge tower of a Star Destroyer, causing no damage whatsoever..."
"after a heavy battering of the shields, the destruction of a sensor globe and a temporary power loss of the deflector screens allows an A-Wing to suicidally crash into the bridge windows of the Executor..."
"the ewok celebration continues, the furry denizens unaware that heavy debris from the Death Star II continue to rain down upon the planet, precipitating a mass extinction event..."
