TIE Shields
Okay, I posted this pic:
over at the XWA Upgrade Project forums to maybe get them to consider shielded TIE variants for their project. The first response says that it's an obvious photoshop job. Can anyone confirm or deny that? I don't have access to the movies at the moment, so I can't check myself.

Tell them to watch the goddamn movie themselves and hit the pause button. If they still can't see it they're being deliberately obtuse. Call them on it.Rogue 9 wrote:Okay, I posted this pic over at the XWA Upgrade Project forums to maybe get them to consider shielded TIE variants for their project. Re: TIE Shields
That's what I thought. I typed up the post calling him on it already, then thought that I'd better check. Thanks. Maybe shielded TIEs will get into the upgrade now. The 17.6 km SSD and Home One already have.Stofsk wrote:Tell them to watch the goddamn movie themselves and hit the pause button. If they still can't see it they're being deliberately obtuse. They are full of shit. Brian Young posted a mpeg of that sequence where those captures were taken from.

The one guy is full of shit. The second one to post pointed out that it wasn't a direct hit and thinks we're seeing navigational shielding. (Hey, the board can't be all that bad. It's a standing rule that the 17.6 km length on the Executor and 4 km length on the Home One are not up for debate. )

Hmmmm. I just discovered to my detriment that at least one mod considers the sensor domes/shield generators debate closed as well, despite no FAQ announcement to that effect, and stomped me for pointing out that they're not shield generators.

*shrug* Its a game, not a frigen documentry about the SW universe.
Further its just AS canon that the domes have a shield function as they have other functions
TIE Fighter does actualy have some TIe's with shields, though REAL shields that can withstand a direct hit or two. Some of the novels also comment that TIE's can be equiped with shields or hyperdrives, though their manouvering/acceleration performance abilities suffer as a result. And its not as if every TIE is equiped thus, SOME have been. It would not be surprising if the Death Star had elite pilots using more advanced TIE models, the picket ships having enough shields to make them harder to simply brush by.

It would make sense for the Death Star's fighters, at least the sentry patrols, to have navigational shielding at a minimum. After blasting a planet to tiny bits, there's gonna be lots of tiny debris that I'm sure a pilot would not want slamming into his forward viewport at thousands of kilometers per second.

"Right then. Alpha Squadron, you have the Eastern Hemisphere. Beta, Western. Charlie and Delta will remain in reserve. Now. We must determine the outer sentry line. R&D still have not delivered the shielded fighters, so I will accept any voulinters.
*dead silence*
"Very well. Bring me the binary decision device!"

"Heads!"
"Tails it is. Gamma, you have picket duty"
*The sobing pilots of Gamma squadron are pushed into their fighters to a full honor guard of personal and military band as they launch to their doom *
In lieu of the EU, that's probably true.Rogue 9 wrote:The one guy is full of shit. The second one to post pointed out that it wasn't a direct hit and thinks we're seeing navigational shielding. Unless you become a canon purist that is. The TIEs in ANH, by the EU was supposed to be more obselete than the ones in TESB and ROTJ. So, for those arguing that the TIEs in ANH were of more advanced types, WEG disagree with you.

You mean it's DOCTORED?! It isn't a real TIE fighter caught on camera with real lasers and starfighter shield interactions??? OMG!!!Rogue 9 wrote:The first response says that it's an obvious photoshop job.

You're thinking too broadly. While the TIEs used in ANH were of an older model than the ones in ESB and RotJ, that doesn't mean that some of the TIEs stationed at the Death Star couldn't have been outfitted with enhanced navigational deflectors.PainRack wrote:Unless you become a canon purist that is. Especially considering that Photoshop came out over 15 years after ANH was released.Rogue 9 wrote:Oh shut up. You know what I meant. Yes, version 0.46. John Knoll and James Cameron talked about that in the T2 Extreme bonus features.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:The first film to use Photoshop (in a pre-release stage) was The Abyss.
EDIT: They also used it extensively in T2.

Are you guys reading a different thread?
Either way, if it wasn't fixed in the SE version, it was probably meant to do that. (Though that doesn't explain Obi-wan's non-glowing lightstick in the Death Star duel)
Sounds like he believes it was a film editing gaffe. not a photoshop.seems to me like whoever did the edit didn't think someone would pause at the spot where he spliced in the explosion. i wouldn't delve into this too much
