Valid method?

Can we get valid astrophysical data about the planets by comparing how large the stars/sun in the sky is to known star characteristics, and thus derive the local AU? From this we apply Kepler's laws to get orbital period, and see if we can go anywhere from that.

Would that be valid, or fail like Bobby's TIE distance scaling?

Also, does anyone know if the star density is correct for the space shots and where the planets are suppossed to be in the galaxy?
