The following screengrab (~360K PNG24) shows what is probably the majority of the surviving Rebel fleet taking station over where the Rebel commandos and Bright House Clan are.

By my count, I see 13 cruisers, 3 frigates, 2 corvettes and a bunch of transports as having survived.

How are you differinciating between the some of those cruisers and the Galofree transports. Some of the closer ones, you can make out the spinal (spartan like, I've always thought) ridge on the Gallofree's but the others in the distance could be either.

The ships in the background facing forward appear to have two lights (reflections from the DS2 about to go boom?) on them, but in the wrong place for the engines of the Gallofree Transport and the count is wrong (transports have three engines). The color and overall shape are also different as well.

I only see six ships with a blobby like structure with multible engines (reversed, I might add. the engines are on the bottom or the left hand side and top on the right) like the liberty type.

Two more on the far right hand side, with four engines, more or less like the wingless cruiser.

And four blobs that don't appear to have any engine lights, and a further four that appear to have two engine flares/lights.

I disagre...

I count 18 Transports. 6 Cruisers, 2 Corvettes and at least one frigate. The vast majority of the ships are the transports...and IMHO, 6 Cruisers and 18 Transports is far more in line with all the other shots of the Rebel fleet in ROTJ then 13 Mon Cal Cruisers.

Keep in mind that there are other ship classes at Endor than just Mon Cal. though.

Specifically these ones.

Its possible that one of the box like engine structures in Phongn's pics is the 'bulk cruiser' looking one. It's possible that one of the blobs, is the 'Dreadnaught' looking one. In which case, the count of cruisers go up, with out having more 'Mon Cal' cruisers.

Hmmm, I don't think I agree with you two Nebs on the far right side. And you missed the Neb in front of and slightly above the Falcon.

Has it ever been explained why the Alliance brought so many Gallofree transports to the battle? Was it a desperate attempt to slightly increase the total firepower of their fleet (4 twin laser cannons per each freighter)?

According to the ROTJ novel, they were loaded with explosives and used as improvised (and extremely large) proton torpedoes.

Um, the proper analogous term would be 'fire ship' I do believe. Or just as applicable would be kamikaze.

You mean like Q-ships? Or am I thinking of something else?

Something like Q-ships, yes, but with only bolt-on modifications as opposed to the more extensive ones on British and German ships.

So is this one of the new shots? (Haven't cracked my copy of the DVDs open yet) And it's pre-DS2 destruction? Did I read that right?

If so, could this be an attempt by Lucas to stave off the "Endor Ecological Disaster" situation that would be precipitated by the debris from DS2?

It's definitely of higher quality than the SE.

I doubt the transports were used as fireships because we never saw a kamikaze run in the movie and a lot survived the battle. Just added for a little extra firepower seems most logical to me

I don´t get this explanation of all those freighters being simple 'kamikaze'-ships. There wouldn´t be any "survivors" left of this type if their purpose was to crash into Imperial ships, and there´s dozens left in that pic!
I like the "armed merchant cruiser"-explanation best, since it´s fits in with all the shots of them sticking close to the bigger ships (instead of veering off and hitting the closest destroyers).

This is immediately before the DS2 blew and a similar scene was in the original movie.

Saxton noted that the Rebels managed to shield a small section of the forest moon.

The shot is the same as the original, they just added more ships.

well, what could modified transports be used for in the rebel fleet?

two things, I'd guess, fighter screening and torpedo boats.
