Apparently the line David Prowse was saying at the end of ESB and that Mark Hamill had to react to, although he knew what was going to be overdubed, was Darth Vader's claim that he did not kill Luke's father and instead it was Obi-Wan who had killed Anakin Skywalker.
I don't think that bit would have had quite as much shock value that Darth Vader being Luke's father did but I do think it could have lead to all kinds of interesting storylines.
Vader could be lying certainly....
He could be telling the truth, but then was Ben lying outright and why?
Maybe Anakin was drawn to the darkside by Vader and so from a certain point of view it was Vader who killed Anakin while Obi-Wan just killed the Sith he had become.
Does anyone else find this stuff interesting? I keep thinking I'd like a new RoTJ "Infinites" storyline to take a shot at it.

Ben explained his answer.
Anakin turned to the Dark side and became Darth Vader. When that happened the good man who was your father was destroyed.

That was disapointing ..Should we show this Federation how to build a ship so we may have worthy foes? Typhonis 1

I read some stuff off of Prowse's website a long time ago where he says he was blamed for leaking to the press that Darth Vader dies in RotJ when it was actually the person interviewing him that told him. He wasn't in the Darth Vader death scenes after all so unless he had all of the script there wasn't any reason for him to know.
Anyway, going by what Lucas says in the ESB commentary I don't think he trusted anyone not to blab. Only he and Kirshner knew early on, and Kirshner told Hamill right before they filmed the scene. That's keeping it pretty quiet.

And this was before the age of the Internet. I mean look at all the spoilers we're getting for the prequels. BTW I have sworn to keep myself as spoiler free for Ep. III as I can. Yay me.Tsyroc wrote: Anyway, going by what Lucas says in the ESB commentary I don't think he trusted anyone not to blab. Um, yeah. Except I was talking about the line that was in the script where it would likely have made Anakin and Vader two completely different people like it first seemed in ANH.Isolder74 wrote:Ben explained his answer.

Although, if you are saying that with that line Vader is blaming Obi-Wan for driving him (Anakin) to the dark side and therefore being responsible for Anakin's death that's an interesting take on it. It keeps the characters the same and in a way seems to fit with some of what were seeing in the new movies. It is certainly within character for Anakin to keep blaming Obi-Wan for his problems so it makes sense that Vader, someone really holding on to his hate, would still have the same opinion even decades later.

Or we are looking at a before release version of the script. Your Idea does have merit. As Vader himself says "That name no longer has any meaning for me." To Luke later in Jedi.Tsyroc wrote:Um, yeah.
