Anakin's arm *Spoilers*

Ok, we now have confirmation from Lucas in his ROTJ commentary that Anakin will have that shitty golden arm that he had at the end of AOTC putting to rest the claim from others that it was only a temporary arm. (Lucas says he will keep a glove on it because he is not happy with it or soemthing to that effect) WTF?! How is it that the medical technology progressed from AOTC to ESB to the point where you have a realistic prosthetic vs. the craptacular arm that Anakin has in AOTC? And need I add this prosthetic was supplied by the Alliance, an orgnization that did not nealry have the resources the Jedi or Republic had? Are we expected to believe that the arm Anakin has was the best they could do?

I always figured that they were going to have Anakin ("I'm good at fixing stuff" not to mention I've been McGuyvering cool stuff out of nothing since I was a kid) develope the improvements on the artificial limbs that we later see in ESB.

We also have the issue of cloned tissue. Why don't we see Anakin having a regrown limb attached. If cloning is illegal due to the after effects of the clone wars it wouldn't apply to him at the start of the clone wars.

The techno union had just left the republic. They amek things like that, and now the republic had second best things. Anakin kept it because he turned to Vader before the TU came back into the fold.

Its possible that the lightsabre damaged the stump to much for a cloned replacement. Alternatively, time constraint meant he got a robot replacement and then later they couldn't undo it to give him a cloned one, of they couldn't spare cloning production right then for limbs because it was needed for troopers. As Vader, the mechanical parts gave him advantages in hunting down the Jedi.

Where does Lucas say this? Is it in the scene where Vader's arm is cut off? I'll have to run that one by again... I guess it doesn't pay to go to sleep listening to the commentaries if you want to catch all the details. ; )

Maybe Anakin has his own personal reasons for it.

It could be like a scar to show off to others or a reminder of what utter recklessness can do to you.

He may just keep it gloved for practicality's sake.

In the simplest form possible, I'm just saying that Anakin just may simply not want a prosthetic like Luke's.

Somewhere in the ROTJ commentaries when he's discussing linking the prequels and OT thematically he talks about luke's limb and Vader's. He's says someting like: "And as we'll see in Episode III Anakin has the mechanical arm we saw in AOTC and he hides it with a glove."

You might be reading too far into that comment.

Well, something changes at some point, because the arm we see in AotC was skeletal style, but when Luke chops off Vader's arm near the wrist in RotJ, the stump is clearly a fully rounded-out and normal sized arm stump.

Somewhere around ESB he gets an upgrade.

The galaxy is at war, maybe all the good prosthetics are going to the clone troopers?

I assume that Anakin's arm isn't inferior at all to Luke's, considering that both seem to work just as well as a real limb. It seems the only difference is aesthetics and physical composition.

I mean, the only real difference between Luke's and Anakin's is that Anakin's doesn't have artificial skin. And that could be HIS choice. Keeps it bare as a reminder, but still hides it from his and others view.

Stravo, what was your beef, again?

A hero of the Republic that faced Dooku and is buddy buddy with Palpatine himself doesn't get first crack at good prosthetics over a completely disposable clone trooper?

Nah. Thy have interchangable parts, according to the SW.com databank.

It may have been driectly replaced and funded by the Jedi order, who probably wouldn't bother with the extra expentiture of a realistic flesh covering just for looks. A Jedi Knight doesn't need it.

As stated, Vader's right arm in ROTJ is clearly a full-size cybernetic prosthetic, not the skeletal gold arm Anakin had at the end of AOTC. Considering that he falls into a molten pit of some sort in ROTS, a new prosthetic is also likely (not to mention required by ROTJ).

The arm he uses may even be SUPERIOR to a normal arm. Maybe it rotates better or has better durability or has little utilities like pocket knives and can openers that pop out of the fingers :D

Luke's hand has a bunch of sensory responses in it, maybe Anakin just wants textile sensation with no hot/cold pain or something, easier to block blaster bolts with

From the brief scenes we see of the duel between him and Obi wan, its clear that he it does not impede his lightsabre skills in any way and that it is thus likely just as flexible as a human one.

It probably has a "Vibrate" setting and padme insisted he keep it.

It's pretty inconceivable that a lightsaber blow to the arm would've done so much damage that a good prosthetic was impossible, when a blow to the wrist, followed by massive trauma and a desperate flight in the Falcon under fire wouldn't have done the same to Luke.
Alternatively, time constraint meant he got a robot replacement and then later they couldn't undo it to give him a cloned one, of they couldn't spare cloning production right then for limbs because it was needed for troopers. Those are more likely.

Just think.. if Anakin's arm looks like THAT.. how must the rest of Vader's mechanical body parts look in comparison?

That's not really the best logic.

That's primiarily because, going by what we know of his subsequent injuries and the appearance of his right arm in RotJ, his mechanical arm was replaced by a new one along with his other severely-damaged limbs.

Remember Spanky, "the more obvious I think a conclusion is, the less I need to explain or rationalize it" is not the best mentality. Image

The thing we seem to be forgetting here is: What does Anakin want?

Does he want a frail, biological arm, or does he want a freaky, metal arm that is much more powerful and respect-inducing? Think about it, this isn´t John Doe recovering from an accident here, it´s Darth Vader Lite.

EDIT: He does have a black, leather-like arm in ROTS, with some thick padding and stuff. Maybe he just wasn´t pleased with the golden model. :P
