HTL Blast DOES Nail ISD

Post by Master of Ossus »

DarkStar argued that the two HTL's observed being fired from the Mon Cal cruiser while Ackbar is giving the order to hit the Executor missed.

He was right.

However, the THIRD shot that the Mon Cal fires NAILS the ISD near the bridge, utterly annihilating it. A fourth shot fired a split second later seems to connect, also, since it doesn't emerge from the ISD's debris field (it's hard to track through the explosion).

The shots both land near the bridge, and the entire ship goes up, showing that substantial damage was done BEFORE the reactor was hit.

Do we know that those two shots aren't meant for something else? I mean like aimed for another ship and Ackbar's order didn't get through yet? (obviously, since the third one doesn't hit the Executor).

Not that it matters much, the whole area was jam-packed with ECM.

Got any screen caps? I know the third shot hit, but I didn't know there was a fourth shot.

In the same scene, it appears that the ISD's weapons miss the Mon Cal, but then there are explosions around the Mon Cal that's on the far left side of the screen (widescreen only). Any way to tell if they're related with the visuals on the DVD?

Yes, I also observed that when I first saw ROTJ on DVD and zoomed in to watch it more closely. I didn't even know that Darkstar had challenged it, as it has been pretty clear all the time (but of course it's much easier to see it on the DVD).

We don't. The "miss" I spoke of refers only to the fact that they did not impact the superstructure of the ISD, and instead went past it.

I don't have a program for taking screecaps off of DVD's. I should invest in one, one of these days.

There was definitely a fourth shot, after the ISD begins exploding. It probably hits, since it doesn't seem to emerge from the debris field.

I'll check.

Because I am interested, what programs are required to taking screencaps off of DVDs?

Something like PowerDVD or MP Classic.

I could grab the shots for you but I'm not sure exactly what you're looking at.

Do you have a DVD time reference number or something like that?

I think these might be it but I'm not positive and they aren't the greatest since the action was taking place in the distance beyond Ackabar's head.

another shot coming in from another direction can be seen under the tie fighter.

That one definately doesn't pass through the ISD but it doesn't seem to add a lot to the damage in an obvious fashion before the ships reactor blows out throughout the middle of the ship.

Duh. I've always known this. And all I had was the VHS pan 'n' scan version. Awesome shot.

Destruction of a Star Destroyer. First two shots miss, subsequent two hit home. Pretty hard to argue that... (QuickTime, 1.88 MB)

I wonder how much of material that turbolaser hit had to vaporize to make a big ass fireball like that in the middle of a vacuum. :?

Could be liberated atmosphere from within the ship. Plus, we also know for whatever reason that Star Wars ships explode when their reactors are destabilized too severely. Could be a combination of both, rather than simply vaporized material strictly due to the HTL hit.

And who knows what insane-high-density hypermatter fuel tanks are gonna do. Well, they appear to explode, but you know what I mean.

What's with that big explosion on the left? It doesn't appear to be coming from anything.

Consider the massive pressure the fuel has to be under given the ammount required. Damage the tank, you are going to get a huge explosion similar to that. Especially if it's really dense (as in near neutronium levels) because then you get beta decay and a huge ball of plasma

Look carefully; if you don't know what it is, it appears to be a bigass explosion materializing around the nose of the Star Destroyer which has already exploded. Look again, and you'll see it's a TIE Fighter being shot up by an X-Wing.

the explosion on the left is from a tie fighter that the x-wing was chasing

That explosion on the left is the TIE that swoops in front of the SD. The X-wing destroys it, but obscures it, making the explosion look like it comes from nowhere.

It's closer to the camera than the ISD exploding.

EDIT: Well, I guess I'm just a slow-ass motherfucker then... :D

See that TIE fighter that comes down across the screen? And the X-wing that follows? That explosion is the X-wing pasting the TIE.
