Battlefront Symbology

Probably old news by now, but after playing Star Wars Battlefront on the pc, I see that the symbol for the CIS (Confederacy of Independant Systems, ie Seperatists) is a hexagon with six spokes and a central shape in the "wheel."

The "Republic" symbol is the same one as the one we saw in Saxton's AOTC ICS (which he labelled alternately as a "Bendu" symbol and "Symbol of Galactic Unity."), ie: the circle with eight "spokes" and eight "bars" surrounding it in circle like a starburst.

CIS Symbol + Republic Symbol = Empire Symbol!

*Whoa*

Now I wonder where this leaves the whole similarity between the Trade Federation symbol (behind the scenes Episode I art) and the "Rebellion" symbol...

Actually I think you may be the first to notice. I've seen the Separatist symbol before SW: Battlefront, however, in one of the artworks of General Greivous (with battledroids hoisting it, on a battlefield that has obviously been won by the CIS rather than the GR).

Actually, I noticed the connetion months ago.

Never thought it that way but, it seems to be so.

Edit: BTW what does Trade Fed symbol look like?

See? I specifically had you in mind Spanky. ; )

I never noticed because I had never seen the symbol of the CIS prior to getting Battlefront, and I got the game a week ago, but I know tons of people got it the day it came out (with their dvd's).

But, thinking back, I never played Galactic Battlegrounds: Clone Campaigns (which came out to coincide with AOTC) and you can be the CIS in that one, so perhaps the symbol was shown there.

IIRC no symbol for them is shown in the game.

Okay. Oops, amended my post. I forgot that I did get the game sooner, I just didn't play it right away. ; )

Interesting about GBG. So is this the first appearance of that symbol in an official material or not?

Edit: I don't mean Episode III spoilers (which I'm avoiding) but like some book, comic, databank entry, etc.

I believe it was shown months ago in a comic splash page (or something) in the image that Vympel mentions. That was shown here in the EIII spoiler thread, but I don't think it itself was an actual spoiler because it was published around that time.

Interesting. So whatever the case, it seems to be more than just a game quirk, but probably a case of the game reflecting developing "canon" ideas. ; ) Or something...

I take it this was an "Art of ROTS" type deal then? (Production sketch)... (like the Ralph Mcquarrie [sp?] sketches)?

No, it was from a comic book, I think.

Posted again rather than edited so that it wouldn't be missed.

Here is the image of Grievous with the banners of the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems:
