Was Palpatine the culmination of a Sith plot?

Post by Stravo »

Palpatine was one of the last in a long line of Sith lords and masters, each of whom was harboring a deep grudge against the Jedi order. We all know that eventually Palpatine usurped control of the Republic and formed the Empire, instituing the Purge and getting rid of the Order.

Now the question is whether Palpatine did this all on his own in terms of coming up with the plan on how to get control and destroy the Jedi or was he part of a scheme that stretched back millennia as the Sith tried to position themselves for the eventual coup? Was he the right Sith at the right time or was he a self made Emperor, the smartest of the bunch to actually have his plan come to fruition?

I guess the way of the Sith only helped Palpatine achieve "galactic domintation". If he came in contact with the Sith teachings only when he arrived at Coruscant (no way to tell, really), his own personality, and political under-handing were already fully formed and would only be moulded, or adjusted, to the Sith-way.

There's little evidence either way, but since Lord Bane aceded to the mantle of Sith Master one millienium earlier, Palpatine's actions had been the intention and general plan that the Sith hoped to execute.

I agree that his actions was the culmination of the Sith plan. But from other points of view, the Sith agenda could have been simply the extermination of the Jedi, nothing else. All of this will of course depend on the revelations made during ROTS.

I'd lean more towards him being the self made Emperor only because patience does not jibe with the dark side ethic. The whole point of serving the dark side is the quick path to power and I could not conceive of a dark side force user simply setting up the next one in line for a power grab.

Darth Bane patience a virtue for the Sith (and two only rule) so that the Sith would destroy themselves before they had their revenge.

WHile that works in theory it ignores the precepts of giving in to the dark side in the first place. Its all about following the quick and easy path to power.

Could you imagine Palpatine, Vader, Maul or Dooku having to jump through hoops, challenges and essentially sacrificing themselves so that the next Sith lord down the line is one step closer to a power grab instead of making the power grab themselves?

Unless these are the exceptions rather than the rule for Sith lords.

The Lords of the Sith aren't idiots; most of them realized, especially thanks to precognizance, that they were not yet in any position to make the reach for power.

It works practice when you know that go public too early you'll have to fight 10 000 Jedi with 2 Sith (since more then that will turn on themselves).

I think Palpy fucked over the whole plot. He defied the rule of 2 by having more spare sith and Dark Jedi than i've had dinners.

Keep in mind, that the latter three were all students with Palpatine as the Master - so if the later emperor fucked up, it would go over to them.

Of course on the other hand there is Palpatine remembering Vader to be patient in ROTJ, so perhaps the EU-conception of impatience leading or being essential to the DarkSide is flawed.

Plus they were only trained to an extent; Mara could only access her Force abilities with Palpatine's assistance, or to the extent if I recall correctly.
