Hating Pablo Hidalgo

I recently got sent a stack o' magazines from some friends of mine in the Alpine Garrison (501st)-- Star Wars Insider magazines, that is, several of them, and I have enjoyed reading them.

Towards the back of each magazine are a few pages by Pablo Hidalgo, the "Official Internet Guy" or whatever for Star Wars.

I've heard the name before, here on SDNet, and usually associated with a great deal of venom and dislike. I am curious--

-- why is Pablo Hidalgo such a persona non grata around here?

From what I've read, it's because he's one of the LFL guys who wants to treat SW like a Road Runner cartoon -- meaning that it doesn't matter if any sort of in universe consistency is maintained.

Additionaly, he's insulted Warsies who are interested in analyzing the technical aspects of SW on multiple occasions.

Coyote, if you have a stack of Insider's, may I direct you to my special request about Holonet News here? Could you possibly help me? :)

Hidalgo is the most visible and prominent of the "consistency doesn't matter--all we care about is the story" brigade. He's been a particular asshole, and has mocked people who actually care about technology issues in the past. He's used some truly moronic strawmen in his attacks, too. Stuff like (paraphrased) "Don't forget, these guys can't explain yellow letters in space!"

I have those issues... not with me at this computer, but I can bring them along next time I'm here...

So THAT'S the ho'! I'd forgotten that was the guy... damn, I read part of that thread awhile ago and forgot the name of the guy being bashed-- I thought it was some pro-Trek wanker... okay...

Indeed no more needs to be said after that. Poe takes the cake again. Don't know how you do it.

From elsewhere in the thread, one of the herd:
frank wrote:OR...

One of them EU Continuity fellers could come along and explain how it IS possible to walk around safely in a giant space worm wearing a plastic breathing gizmo...

Okay...

Any second now...
Right, because we all know how dangerous it is inside giant space worms from experience. You've gotta love the reasoning on this people: my logic says it would be dangerous, the situation is not dangerous, therefore the situation must be incorrect. If the Sarlaac takes a thousand years to digest somebody, it's not too surprising to see Han, Leia, and Chewie walking around unharmed for less than two minutes in a giant space worm. God, I just want to bitchslap these people sometimes, not for feeling the way they do, but acting like anyone who doesn't isn't thinking straight. Then there's the VP (Randy Stradley) who talks about them being in a vacuum in this scene and it being unrealistic. Naturally:

"Get this damn cloud out of the way so I can see the vacuum!"

Or maybe it's not a vacuum, hey VP of Just Shut The Fuck Up?

Gotta love idiots which have to fabricate contradictions in order to pretend they know anything.

And to see them try and bluster past those who did not fail High School science is all the more amusing.

I hate Hidalgo.
This guy is such an asslicker. Sorry.
He's kind of a braindead. He likes any bullshit that comes out under SW, actually; no matter contiunuity disrepancies; no matter the idiocy of the events; story; heroes. That does not matter in the slightest.

I also hate him so much for spewing out spoilers about Episode III so openly. He's full shit.

He is the one rejecting Endor apocalypse.
Obviously he's loves that embarassment - Glove of Darth Vader... go figure. That alone should be enough to have him dead.

He thinks of a childrens book higher than of canon material?!

That's really dumb!

He's almost worse--he's too immensely stupid to understand why Glove of Darth Vader doesn't make any sense, or why it is unsatisfactory to assume that Endor could have been saved by such the hyperspace anomaly that purportedly transported Vader's indestructable glove of doom to Calamari.

I'm already glad, that I have never seen that "book". It must be horrible to read, and only really young children could enjoy that crap. Thank God that Pablo isn't making the canon rules.....

You know...
Reading THAT could result in a serious mental trauma.
... and I'm curious, is that not what exactly happened to Pablo?

Whenever you see something you consider impossible in Sci-Fi, you don't go and say "this makes no sense, this is like Looney Tunes!!!*head explodes*". The first step is to tell yourself "They must have found a way." After you took that first step, the rest is cake.

But the crap that Hidalgo spews is just crap. Its one thing to look at scifi with an open mind but its just hors Shit to take the Shit from those books

Looney toons dont follow any laws of physics, what we are doing is trying to discuse what happens in the SW universe with Physics. The stuff made for kids should never be used for evidance never.

Sorry about my rant. :)

Hidalgo's reasoning is even worse than that, because it's SUCH a false analogy. In Loony Tunes and similar cartoons, characters are literally killed and resurrected for the next episodic blurb with no explanation whatsoever. Is he really trying to say that Star Wars characters could do the same thing?

Loony Tunes is specifically designed to be a light comedy, and it perpetuates many of its impossibilities in a hyperbolic fashion specifically to generate laughter. Are we to laugh every time a ship goes into hyperspace, or a lightsaber is activated, or a Death Star destroys a planet?

Hidalgo fundamentally does not understand our section of the fanbase. This is directly attributable to his stupidity, since it's been explained to him several times in the past and he simply comes back with the same dumb arguments.

Don't. I mean. Don't. Ever. Read. That. Series.

Its appeals to Pablo only because its the same nature of Loony tunes that he espouses for the rest of SW. I mean, when TFN members has to cooperate to come up with "how to make TGODV" understandable with the rest of SW canon, that shows you how fucked up continuity and sense it is.

"So, who cares if, like, John Travolta escapes a grenade blast by doing a Max Payne style dive 10-cm away? Unrealistic? Please! Can you explain, like, how come there's a camera following the characters around all the time? Now THAT is unrealistic!"

That pretty much sums up Hidalgo's appeal to being a fucking moron.

Isn't that Pablo's rant?
Stupidly Outrageous wrote:And if you're writing a cross sections book or anything that pretends to be a technical manual, for God's sake STOP! Or, at least get ready for the hate mail.
WHO is the freak going to hatemail? Is that a direct attack against Saxton, Luceno and all the folks who made Star Wars Incredible Cross Sections and Star Wars Technical Journal?
IIRC, the I.C.S. and SWTJ were out even BEFORE that goon got his place in Insider!

Why does he make such outrageous statements about the products of the Star Wars franchise? Does he not understand that those tech guides and cross-sections come from the goddamn same franchise he's in? He's chopping the very branch he's sitting on. Ugly. I don't understand how can LFL overlook statements like this one.

Or what, is Hidalgo going to hatemail LFL?

IMO this should be sufficient grounds for termination.

I also don't understand how he can point at certain LFL publications and say "those are shit! don't buy them unless you're an idiot."

Hidalgo is in charge of fan relations, but has done nothing but target and consistently alienate the technical fans. I have no idea how he has managed to keep his job. None.
