Proton Torp questions

Ok I was wondering about the proton torp used in SW. In a few books they are used agains't capital ships such as the Lusakana (sp). In the books 80 or so took the shields down and did damage to the ship. I didn't think the torps were that powerfull. I seem to rember can't be sure though about a few other books where torps were used. So I guess my question is what are the biggest warheads for SW or are these books a bunch of bs.

In the NJO a proton torp only succeeded in breaking a Hornet Interceptor in half. Not that impressive. But there was another missile NJO, a 'baradium' missile whose detonation created a 'blinding sphere a kilometer wide.' It was also equipped with a droid brain and shields.

Proton torpedoes only appear useful in mass salvos with proper timing. They appear to be very high-power weapons that can overload the shields when fired en mass and striking simultaniously. However, the overload is temporary and can be restored fairly quickly. In The Bacta War, the same book where the Lusankya attack you mentioned occured, Rogue Squadron lowered the shields of a VSD with torpedoes. The VSD rolled, and Wedge immediately knew that if they took down the fresh shields, then the shields they had just downed would be back up before they could launch a third salvo.

So you would need at least 2 waves seperated by enough time to impact close enough together but not close enough they that the scond wave aren't destoried by the explosions. Makes sense

I always found these interesting. The first SW publications put the SW proton torps at 1.5kiloton only, then fixed it as a anti-capital ship weapon when LucasArts created the X-wing and TIE fighter games. However, the fact that most X-wing pilots were capable of using it as anti-starfighter weapons created the interesting novel experience of Micheal Stackpole Rogue Squadron using them for anti-starfighter work, and Gold/Defender Wing using them for cap ship work.

Don't forget that the Hornet has shields, so we probably only saw a fraction of the damage.
And btw don't forget, the different authors in NJO ranged from minimalists (Vector Prime where a task force = 1 ISD and a couple corvettes) to the opposite (Star by Star, tens of thousands of ships in a massive battle, minefields that encircle entire planets, planetary shields that can take thousands of capships ramming into it and tens of thousands of ships pounding on it, etc etc).
Some books had a proton torp barely scratching a cheesecake; other books (Dark Tide 2 for example) had proton torps with multi-kilometer blast radius in atmosphere, and other books had proton torpedoes completely tearing apart unshielded cruisers.

IIRC, in one of the X-Wing books, paired proton torpedoes (one of which the narrative was focused on) was described as being timed well enough that they exploded within nano-seconds of each other.
