Are you going to change the background from white? And when are you going public (or have you already)?

Well I read it before this so ... I just haven't seen (or rather checked) if you have made it accessible via your main page is all I'm saying!

I wonder if PH is simply full of resentment because he's no longer a WEG guru...? I mean, really, it sounds like he has some sort of unknown issues nagging at him. His attitude is intensely personal...
Basically I think he's just a compulsive-obessesive nut.

I got that impression too. He accuses 'tech heads' about whining over this or that, yet as Lord Poe correctly points out, respected professionals like Dr David West Reynolds and Dr Curtis Saxton
are those 'tech heads'. PH's own views sound like nothing more than a whine in itself, and I was left with the distinct impression he was beaten up by science nerds when he was in high school. They probably took his lunch money to buy a chemistry set.
Seriously, he is no professional. He certainly doesn't act like one. Good rebuttal from Lord Poe, especially considering how civilised it was.

If only you could see the original before I run it by some trusty censors!
"No, Wayne, I don't think that asking Hidalgo to jam his head up his ass until his lips kissed his tonsils would make an effective article..."
It wasn't that bad, but I received some really great advice. Brian Young has a library full of counter arguments by people who do these measurements all the time for the movies. And he pointed out that "LOTR" has a "tech manual" !

Are you planning on sending this article to anyone who might be able to change things for the better, or just leave it as a reference in the Morgue?

I like the pictures for the avatars.
Great article all in all.

George Lucas in The Annotated Screenplay on page 5 wrote:I knew from the beginning that I was not doing science fiction. I was doing a space opera, a fantasy film, a mythological piece, a fairy tale. I really thought I needed to establish from the start that this was a completely made up world so that I could do anything I wanted.
(About the "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away ...")
"... it all has to show impeccable logic and unflawed realism ..." The "Tech Heads" start from the assumption that it is completely succesfull in that. And I mean COMPLETELY! This is SOD. (Of course this cannot be true, as the movies are only illusions, for example you will not kill anyone or even risk injuries (hopefully) for the movie to show unflawed realism. And we are not even talking about filming errors ...)
It is good to know how large a dragon from a fairy tale is, and how powerfull it is relative to other things from the same tale.
However, what "Tech Heads" do is to derive its muscular system and count the feed it needs, not to mention its internal temperature. The problems arise when something happens in the tale that would not be physically possible based on those derivations (the knight actually winning against the dragon or GL not allowing the Endor Holocaust for example). Then the story- teller (or an employee) has to find weird explanations for the absolute source to work, like the dragon was not figthing at its full capability (for its life), or the destroyers in TESB did not used their multi thousand gee maneouvering capability (to avoid collision), or he/she has to clearly refuse the "Tech Heads" with the "this is only a tale".

An excellent and very informative article, Lord Poe! This article summarizes very well how "tech-heads" are ridiculed over at the Official Forums and the attitude of the person that's more or less responsible for the online-contact with the fans of Star Wars. While I'm not that much of a "tech-head" myself (well, I like to discuss these things, but I'm not trained in physics, engineering or anything similar, I'm strictly a layman), my opinion is that the OS shouldn't take this kind of stand. Hidalgo's work on the Set Diaries, Post Notes etc. has been great, but I can't stand that patronizing attitude.
As for the layout of that particular page, it's great. I think it's good that the background is white and without any unnecessary decorations.

Ironically, "conjecture" comes from the Latin
conicere which means to draw together or infer, or, more literally, to throw together (
cum, with +
iacere, to throw).

In the SW fandom community, you can be a furry, and you won't get singled out for ridicule. You can camp out on the street for a month waiting to see a movie, and you won't get singled out for ridicule. You can dress up in full costume even when it's not Halloween, and you won't get singled out for ridicule (you'll probably get asked for costuming tips). But try to say "wait, there's a logical and objective way of determining how long one of those ships is", and ... you get showered with ridicule.
This is a really brilliant and telling point. At least people outside of the sci-fi community looking in have some excuse for their attitudes, but what sense is it for nerds telling other nerds that their nerdiness is way to unfashionable. "I tell you the truth, first remove the pocket protector from your own shirt pocket before leading your brother nerd..."

That above quote was reworded from my original to much better effect by Mike. That's why I grabbed it!

Good article. I only wish that a copy of it would be brought to the attention of somebody in Lucasfilm who can do something about it. Seriously, I simply don't understand why there seem to be so many cases of somebody from a company's "public relations" pissing on a signifigant portion of the fan base publically, then get away with it.

Now that's impressive. No further comments necessary.

Not to me too, but I have to second Lord of the Farce's comment...isn't there any way we can show somebody at Lucasfilm this and express our, to put it mildly, concern? Maybe attach a bunch of signatures to a copy of the webpage? I dunno, just throwing out ideas here, but really...

I wouldn't spam the sw.com message board with it. After all, its just an opinion article. But you can point people to the webpage when you come up on similar arguments.

Yeah, that's not really what I had in mind either. I was talking about actually printing out and mailing it to someone at Lucasfilm who could say, "Wow, our PR guy is being a jerk...maybe we should haul him in and have a bit of a sit-down."

I think it would cause some kind of reaction since the person writing the article is mentioned in the acknowledgements of official books and that the author of the said books are ridiculed. But I think it's better to only keep it on-line.
