How long can a stormtrooper survive in hard vacuum?

Approx 10-15 minutes it depends a bit. Stormie armor has a small independent air supply ment to enable the trooper to leave a contaminated area if his filtration system stops functioning.

Stormtroopers can also be equipped with oxygen recycling tanks to allow for extended operation in a vacuum.

What the hell are they doing out there anyway? Establishing military presence in the area? Guarding against looters and miscreants?
Whatever.

Maintenance, not ST job...

such as... explode? Launch boarding parties? Both of those would be more easily handled with no stormie presence in the trench.
Other options, such as jettisoning R2, would have been done long before, not that close...

They're making sure the rebels don't relocate their base on the DS.
Officer: "Lord Vader, we have located the main rebel base."
Vader: "Excellent, tell me location so we may wipe them out for good."
Officer: "It's right here sir."
Vader: "What do you mean?"
Officer: "Right here, on the DS, sir"
Vader: "WHAT?!?!?"
Officer: "Sir, there was a slight problem with patrolling the outer habitat. About 1% wasn't covered by the patrols, the rebels have made their main base there."
Vader: ".. ... So to destroy the rebels all we have to do is blow up the DS..."
Officer: "That would show them!!! Excellent idea sir!!"
Vader:"I find your faith to a plan so stupid disturbing."

Training under adverse conditions. Say, when exposed to vacuum.

Can we have a higher quality picture of that, from the DVD? I'd like to get a better look.

Pretty good idea, actually. Hostile Environment Exercises, keep them on their toes, just like how military bases have their troopers run drills, jog around and shit.

I don't see any evidence that they can. As much as I may loath to admit it, there's a particularily vile website that does seem to illustrate that Storm Trooper armor is very unlikely to protect a user from vaccuum (suits aren't completely sealed).
As to the screencaps submitted, those can be easily attributed to SW tech that allows hangers to host unprotected personnel without them being exposed to vaccuum. For example, in ROTJ we see a good shot of personnel maintaining craft while seemingly exposed to space from the hanger entrance (right before Han is telling Lando to take the Falcon).

As I've pointed out to others that have brought this up- there is no need to seal a suit in an environment that is not dangerous. That's why Stormtrooper armour has controls for suit sealing, labelled in the VD. In real life, soldiers do not go around in their NBC suits all the time either.

I brightened it up abit, the right stormie looks to be pointing or aiming something at the Falcon. He later puts whatever is in his hand or presses something on his belt, and they do follow the Falcon it is their point of interest. Maybe they are imbedded media getting a story ready for holonet news.
On a side note, after adjusting the pic you can see some brutal matte lines on the right turbolaser, and this is the SE, lazy ILM!

Aw, come on, it´s not that bad.
The upside to clean DVD images is that I can see even more detail, like the structures in the background (two additional turbolasers and a satellite-like dish).
I also noticed the DS Intercom going "Stations 5, 7 and 9, release charges" followed by loud bangs. What kind of weaponry is this, I wonder?
