I'm of too minds about the cheesy as fuck romance dialog. Who HASN'T said embarassing shit like that which he'd NEVER EVER EVER say again- especially in his first ... erm ... romantic foray? I have (as in my first UNSUCCESSFUL romantic foray). Nothing about sands and beaches- but ... damn tacky nonetheless.

Hmmm does explain Greedo.

As for cheesy love dialogue...eh

Seriously the problem I had was her bloody reversal at the last second...I could at least grasp the bad dialogue...sort of.

I tried too space myself out during the romantic parts, by not paying attention and eating popcorn. But this does explain Greedo.

IIRC from last night's viewing, the line is "I don't like sand... it's coarse and rough and irritating... and it get's everywhere... not like here. Here everything is smooth...blahblahsomething"

emphasis mine
I know i am nit-picking, but a lot of "critics" like to misrepresent this line.

The romance part of the movie can be greatly improved with judicious editing. The IMAX cut improves the fireplace scene by cutting down on bad dialogue and cutting out a few other scenes entirely (the scene in the Naboo throneroom, for example). Their removal of the "Anakin's nightmare" scene changes the complexion of the entire plot thread; it leaves open the possibility that Anakin and Amidala were sleeping together on Naboo, and trying to decide whether to take their relationship beyond a physical tryst.

I would have also replaced the scenes in the meadow with the deleted scenes at Amidala's parents' house. The part where her sister says that Anakin is the first guy Amidala's ever brought home is a key plot point; it helps explain why she falls for Anakin's clumsy advances; she doesn't have much experience, and she's probably lonely, presumably from suppressing her personal needs for so long in order to "serve her people".

People defend those scenes saying basically that romance (between inexperienced? in real-life sucks too. But the point is that we go to the movies to watch stuff that doesn't suck.

Watching the young guy trying to hit on girls on Ed is much more rewarding that stupid Anakin telling Padme "Just so you know, guys need to have sex or they die."

And I really could have done without having to see Anakin's nipple.

Now there's a ... unique ... criticism. Seeing a guy's bare chest in a movie for two seconds ain't exactly a peep show designed to turn girls on ... or is it?

The thing is that even for an "inexperience" love story, AOTC still did it badly. The delivery in many parts were pretty bad. Even acknowledging the inexperience.

According to Portman it is. She's an idiot.

"I hadn't even seen a Star Wars movie until I got the part,'' Portman says. ''I mean, come on. I'm a girl. But in this one, you have a hunky guy in Hayden. Even when he's not being lovey-dovey, the girls can focus on his muscles when he's fighting. There's always something for the girls to keep their eyes on.''

Based on Anakin's and Amidala's personal lives, I'm not really suprised by their behavior when removed from highly regimented traditional lives of work, like Jedi Order and politics.

What? It's not like you could even see his muscles during the fights. Hell, if SW wanted to go in that direction Anakin should have gone Ripped Shirt.

I would prefer Portman topless though.

Oh, and who says lovey-dovey anymore? :D

Whatever. That nipple still looks weird. He should have it checked or something.

What? I thought I was agreeing with you. Or do you think they should have had a good romance instead of the inexperienced one, except done better?

My point is that, well, even if in real life inexperienced love were supposed to suck as bad as in AoTC, it shouldn't be depicted like that in movies at all.

But I agree with you that it didn't suck because inexperienced love is supposed to suck, it sucked just because they were badly written and acted.

Ah, I get you now. I think that if there was going to be a romance, it can't be romance novel level. Though it still shouldn't suck. The one in AOTC just sucked. The technical term of course.

Well atleast Sarah Michelle Gellar(Buffy) is a Star Wars fan.
