A close look at Jango Fett vs Coleman Trebor

Many people have attributed Jango superb, great skill on account of his slaying of Jedi Knight Coleman Trebor.

Other people have claimed that this merely shows that Trebor was a clumsy wothless Jedi not worthy of the title.

However, having re-watched this scene in detail on the DVD, I believe that I have it, and it is neither of the above explanations.

It appears to me that the reason that Jango was able to Kill Trebor, is because of the blaster he was using.

It had a severe recoil, indicated by the greater than usual recoil through Jango's arm. This implies an equal and opposite force that is more powerful than most blasters, i.e. a high KE level in the bolt. Another fact (which may or may not be relevant) is that the gun even sounds like it has more of a wallop than normal blasters.

Studying Trebor as he is shot at reveals that he does not "miss" in blocking the bolts. He blocks it, however the force of the bolt physically bludgeons the lightsabre out of his hand, leaving him open for the killing shot.

And there ladies and gentlemen, is the solution to this question. Coleman Trebor was no sub-par Jedi, he died simply because his opponent was using the SW equivelant of a .50 Desert Eagle.

Wasn't Trebor also kind of preoccupied with someone else so Jango was able to catch him off balance?

Where are you basing that from? We don't know how prevalant the Force is among every species. Heck, it doesn't even occur in every species. The lack of any good Quarren or Mon Cal jedi may come from there only being a small number, lessening the chance of a really good one, as opposed to being seaborn.

Good point, IMO. Jango's weapon does seem more powerful than your everyday blaster...but then why didn't Obi-Wan have trouble deflecting the shots on Kamino? Or Mace on Geonosis?

I think it's because he was mroe focused on the Count; he may not have known Jango was there.

Not known he was there? He was standing on the same platform.

Maybe. But I'd just chalk it up to the fact that Jedi are mere mortals, and shit happens.

Not really. He blocked the first shots fired at him, indicating that he should have been prepared for the next shot. He is also a Jedi Master, who sat on the Council. You can see him in the opening few scenes of Episode II.

Trebor sucks. He has weak girlie arms. Windu and Kenobi had no problem deflecting Jango's shots.

I mean that his stance may not have been really stable, so the shots were able to push him over the edge. He might have been in a stance to take on Dooku, but Jango fired at him. Trebor blocked as well as he could, but he was in the wrong stance.

Doesn't mean Coleman knew he was there. The platform is pretty well shielded from a ground view. And it does seem to me that Coleman did seem suprised by Jango's shots-he barely deflected the first several.

Ok I watched the scene several times on my computer, I tried also frame by frame.

First the Jedi jumps on the platform. He doesn't notice Jango and sort-of faces Dooku. Jango fires two or three very rapid shots and the Jedi instinctively blocks all of these without a flinch, his arm is not visibly moved, and he was barely looking. Apparently only afterwards he realizes that somebody shot him. Jango proceeds to shoot three very slow shots (slow as in Rate of Fire) while the Jedi guy is basically facing him, a good 1 1/2 meters away from the railing. All three shots hit, the Jedi doesn't even seem to attempt to block them. Each hit pushes him nearer and nearer the railing, and the final shot just sends him down. Dooku does a smiley face at Jango, who then puts his gun away, Robocop-style.

My opinion is that Jango somehow overrode the normal Jedi's ability to protect itself, either by shooting a more unpredictable sequence, by firing more high-charged blasts, or simply because he was too close to block successfully.

OTOH, it not only took the best (or 2nd best) Jedi in the galaxy to kill Jango, it also took being ran over by a bull right before.

Yeah notice in the DVD just before he gets his head chopped off Jango tries to ignite his jetpack ... it malfunctions. Tsk tsk tsk.

Getting killed by your jetpack is a Fett tradition.

Oh, unless you read the EU.

Vympel....purist, eh?

Actually, there have been some great post-ROTJ Fett stories. I love DE, and I loved Last Man Standing. Great piece of work. Some of it didn't make sense, but Fett wasn't supposed to be normal anyway. Good work.

I figure it was something like this:

(Ok Jedi you're toast!)
BANG BANG BANG
(oh he blocked my first three shots... guess I'll give up now)
BANG! (haha gotcha! sorry changed my mind)
BANG... BANG...

Yoda said once: hard to see the future is... always in motion :)
