Star Wars contradictions

Post by Shrykull »

here's a couple, Palpatine says in ep 2 that "I will not let this republic that has stood for a thousand years...." I thought the old republic was founded 25,000 years ago? And when they say "There hasn't been a full scale war since the formation of the republic" but haven't there been several since it's founding, one where Xim the Despot was involved.

Eh, welcome to the wonderful world of fucked-up SW continuity.

Anyway, I think that while for much of the last 25,000 years, there has been a Republic, it has gone through many alterations, much like the way France has gone through several different Republics ever since the French Revolution. But I could be wrong.

Even Xim's war was not full-scale, in a Galactic sense. The thousand years reference may have been short hand. It was clearly a reference by Lucas to Germany and the Wermacht, so it would not be in the least bit surprising if it turned out to be not entirely accurate. Many Americans, for example, would state that the lands they live in were settled in the early 1600's, even though they had been populated by Native Americans long before that, and by the Spaniards by the mid-1500's.

MoO: there's a better fix.

Convienently, the last major Sith war where all the Sith and nearly all the Jedi were destroyed at the planet Ruusan (which created the Valley of the Jedi from Jedi Knight) was the culmination that Sith War. In the devestation, the Old Republic was reorganized and refamped. That is what Palpy means by "this Republic" for 1,000 years, and what they meant by "there hasn't been a full-scale war since the beginning of the Republic." Evidently Galactic citizens see the governmental reorganization and reform following the Sith war 1000 years prior as a new Republic from the prior regime. The analogy between the French Republics and the two governments before and after the last Sith War is an appropriate one.

The Great Hyperspace War between the Sith Empire and the Republic was definitely full-scale. And it could be argued that the Sith War between Exar Kun's and Ulic Qel-Droma's factions and followers against the Republic was also a full-scale war. The last Sith war, the surviving Sith of which founded Palpatine's Order, was also full-scale and had been building up for nearly a millenia when total war broke out in the galaxy.

Note: this wasn't retconned, but actually convienent coincidence; the Jedi vs. Sith comic series chronicaling the last Sith War, and the founder of Palpy's Sith Order, Darth Bane, 1,000 before ANH predates AOTC.

Since we're on the topic of SW contradictions, where was Obi-Wan during Anakin's duel with Dooku. Anakin jumped in to save Obi-Wan (as he would later save the Emperor, just before betraying him, for an obvious example of parallel action), but when the shot cuts to Dooku v. Anakin, Obi-Wan is nowhere to be seen.

Kinda like how the Empire ended the Old Republic and the New Republic was created when the Empire was defeated.
1000 years after the Battle of Endor, people might say similar things about the (current) republic lasting for 1000 years.

Well, it really was a new government, and a new regime. New constitution. The older Republic had more centralized control and a real military. The Sith were thought to finally be destroyed, and the Republic foolishly decided there was no longer any need for a standing military (keep in mind, there were already three wars with the Sith; ALL major wars had been instigated by the Sith).

Furthermore, the Sith were originally created from exiles from the original war between the Dark Jedi insurrectionists and the Jedi loyalists at the Republic's beginning 25,000 years before. That war lasted a century and the Republic was almost stillborn. Then the Sith returned when the Republic expanded and clashed with the Sith Empire in another devestating war, then Exar Kun and Qel-Droma led a bunch of Sith cultist followers and Dark Jedi along with rogue military elements and the fleets and forces of the Empress Teta cluster against the Republic. The Sith remnants seduced a powerful Jedi Master (think Mace) to the Dark Side along with 50 of his followers, revitalizing the monastic and nearly-defunct Sith, 2,000 years before ANH. They remained relatively hidden, several embarking in abortive coups in Rim sectors and trying to lead revolts against the Jedi and the Republic over the next 1000 years, constantly proving a threat for the Jedi and the Republic. The remaining Sith after that millenia gathered with all the Dark Side Users they could muster in a force of 20,000 Sith and Sith followers known as the Brotherhood. The resulting war nearly destroyed the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order. All 20,000 except 1 were killed by the war's end. The new government displaced the old union, much like the Constitution displaced the Articles of Confederation; this became the current Republic. The Jedi, having lost so much to Jedi who fell, in the form of the Sith Wars and in the form of other Jedi insurrections became increasingly conservative and orthodox. Remember, for the first time, during the last war, almost every Jedi in the Order was killed. They were reduced to just over a hundred Knights. Also, without the Sith as a threat, they became rigid and complacent. Ironically it was the Sith's aggression in the form of last war which turned the Republic and the Jedi into corrupt entities, ripe for Palpatine's takeover.

Especially since it should have been pretty easy just to edit in Obi-Wan after the fact.

For all we know, after 25,000 years passes the Empire could warrant little more than a footnote in Galactic history. How delightful. :D

Basically it'll be remembered for the most destructive period of war in the galaxy's history. Easily outbeating the Great Hyperspace War and the Sith Wars.

You have the Clone Wars, the Galactic Civil War, and the Yuuzhan Vong War within a span of 50 years.

And the Sith still aren't gone.

Explain this:

When Ki Adi Mundi shows up in the Arena fight he has a blue lightsaber. However, in the scene after Yoda orders a perimeter Mundi uses a green lightsaber. Then when Mundi gets on the gunship, his lightsaber is blue again.

Does that mean that lightsabers change color? :D So the color really has no meaning, aside from red?

I know, that is way too damn nitpicky. I notice weird things.

Well there's evidence of crap editing. When Obi is fighting Dooku and he does his little jump and goes to the opposite side, there's a very abrupt cut, obviously there are frames missing there. Also the way the music hiccups.

Here's another one: Yoda asks for a ship. He arrives at the hangar to confront Dooku - WHAT? No clonetroopers, how much easier would it have been if there was a squad of clonetroopers there to help Yoda?

They tried to follow him. But they all banged their heads on the entrance to the hangar and fell off the side :p
