Does anybody know at what point Obi-Wan changes his name, and under what circumstances?

He changes his name to Ben Kenobi sometime after Anakin goes batshit and the Empire subplants the Republic. To be more exact, probably after giving Luke to the Lars.

Obi Wan. I haven't gone by that name since, oh before you were born.

As much as I hate to say it, unless they call him Ben through Ep III, then it looks like Lucas slipped on a minor note. Heh.

Well perhapes Obi-Wan will slip it in when he a Yoda discusses what to do. This hopefully occures before Luke gets squirted out.

that is pretty funny. What a way to mess up a kid in his early life, calling him both Ben and Obi Wan

People in real life as in the movies are not always exact with dates, I mean out of conversation he just said that meaning a long time - much like he said vader killed anakin. As OB1 said in TESB as a Force spirit to luke, he didn't lie - its just his point of view. Besides he has been in isolation for a long time and many many years have passed since ROTS. He was vague in his details to Luke, as they arent relevant to him, what is relavant is his training.

Obi Wan wasn't entirely truthful to Luke though to begin with, he couldn't just come out and say:

"Well I picked up the name Ben right after I dunked your dad in a lava pit and smuggled you and your twin sister off planet, letting her be royalty on Tatooine while you've been miserable in this desert shithole in the ass neck of the galaxy. Since then i've been keeping an eye on you while your old man pretty much wiped out all my friends and conquered the galaxy."

Edit/Addendum:

Saying "before you were born" in this case to me seems like saying "Darth Vaderbetrayed and murdered your father."

Or as Yoda put it.

Not ready for the burden are you.

It appears that the truth was not something that Luke was ready to take yet as evidenced by his reaction to it at Bespin. Would he have believed Ben if he was told the truth? Would he have beleived that he ws the son of Darth Vader?

Darth Vader didn't seem to be sure who Luke was himself yet appeared bsessed with finding out. Then with the call from the Emperor his suspicion was confirmed or perhaps given more weight. I think he was only sure after seeing Luke using the lightsaber he had lost in the fight with Obi Wan being weilded by this Luke Skywalker.

You haven't heard of the Ep III scene explaining this yet!? It happens towards the end of the movie and goes something like this:

Obi Wan: Yoda, the Empire's after me and I got to hide my identity, from now on you may call me.....Betty

Yoda: Errr girls name that is, flaming they will think you are

Obi Wan: (sighs) Fine, then call me Ben.

:P That George Lucas is a master of dialogue.
