[ROTS] Why is the Emperor fat?

I just watched the trailer and I noticed that the Emperor looks pretty fat. Why is that? It's not like the actor has put on any weight or anything like that.
Get your fill of sci-fi, science, and mockery of stupid ideas

Well, I meant in the Emperor make-up he seriously looks distinctly heavier. I'm pretty confused about why he looks so drastically different. And it really doesn't seem like the robes to me. God, I'll have to try and find some screen caps.Firefox wrote:It looked like his robes more than anything.
It looked like he had his Sith robes on over his chancellor robes in that scene to me, which would explain why he looked a bit uh larger than usual. That is if you're thinking of the same scene I am ("Every single Jedi is now an enemy of the Republic").Crom wrote:Well, I meant in the Emperor make-up he seriously looks distinctly heavier. Yes he did, but the closing scene standing next to Vader, he looked normal ... granted you could only see his nose, but it was a normal RotJ nose damit!Crazy_Vasey wrote:It looked like he had his Sith robes on over his chancellor robes in that scene to me, which would explain why he looked a bit uh larger than usual. Maybe I'm just incredibly unobservant but it looks like in TPM and AOTC that he's still in excellent shape, Darth Sidious just favors baggy and layered clothing when not pretending to be a wise and benevolent elder statesmanMange the Swede wrote:Look, Ian McDiarmid filmed his scenes for ROTJ during 1982 and for ROTS 2003, that's more than twenty years apart. People change. On top of that, they didn't have any reference material on the make-up from ROTJ (according to an article over at the OS), so I don't think it's strange at all. He looks about the same, and that's good enough for me.
Yes, precisely. Good point.SCVN 2812 wrote:Maybe I'm just incredibly unobservant but it looks like in TPM and AOTC that he's still in excellent shape, Darth Sidious just favors baggy and layered clothing when not pretending to be a wise and benevolent elder statesmanMange the Swede wrote:Look, Ian McDiarmid filmed his scenes for ROTJ during 1982 and for ROTS 2003, that's more than twenty years apart. Hopefully they were served with fava beans and a nice chianti.Manus Celer Dei wrote:What do you think he did with all those Jedi corpses?
Maybe some kind of barely-noicable illusion performed en masse when he's in public? What with the kind of stuff he can pull, I would't put it past him to make himself look to people as though he's a regular-looking guy while reall being some twisted, withering thing. With him likely being the source of the clouding that's keeping the Jedi from feeling what' going on, he could be doing it when face to face wth a pack of Jedi and they'd be none the wiser.kheegan wrote:I'm just curious as to how Palpatine's facial complexion turns bad when he becomes Sidious.
(shoves a lightsabre where the sun don't shine). Say anything more and it ignites. His Divine Shadow wrote:Well you know, more bodymass, more midichlorians.
Could be he declares himself Emperor at the Senate Halloween (oops, I mean "Jedi Ghost Day") Party. During the ensuing chaos the rubber mask he was wearing (as part of his fat old ghoul costume) became molded to his skin, and he's been forced to wear it ever since!Sharpshooter wrote:Maybe some kind of barely-noicable illusion performed en masse when he's in public? Clouding people's perceptions of his appearance.. hmm.. that's a likely Lucas explanation, but what about electronic broadcasts and recordings of Palpatine? Wouldn't he show up as he really is there?Sharpshooter wrote:Maybe some kind of barely-noicable illusion performed en masse when he's in public? it depends, as those recording could altered to show Palpatine "public" apperence as something as small as R2 unit can store plans to the DS1 and a load of other data, it's probaly possible to alter a Holotransmission on the fly. and also in the senate it possible that palpatine is controlling what the senators see in their monitors. (also in TPM and AOTC Darth Sidious doesn't look in ROTJ even in his private from (when talking to Darth Maul, Darth Tyrannus or the Trade Federation leaders).Cykeisme wrote:Clouding people's perceptions of his appearance.. hmm.. that's a plausible Lucas explanation, but what about electronic broadcasts and recordings of Palpatine?
