Elim and lightsabers

After watching the Clone Wars Vol. 1 DVD there was an arc that dealt with an attack on a Jedi temple at a plante called Elim(Spelling?) which is supposed to be the sole source of Lightsaber crystals. I had no idea the lightsaber crystals could only be found on one world. This idea is supported by the director's commentary where he says the goal is to stop the Jedi from creating lightsabers.

Is this true? WEG materials established that the crystals could be synthetic or natural and that it was the construction of the saber that was difficult and not that there was some magical special element that was needed to construct a lightsaber.

It's not true that lightsabre crystals only come from one planet. There's Arcana, for one.

Crystals formed deep inside Yavin's atmosphere and found on Yavin 4 work fine.

Plus it's said red blades of the Sith are made from artificially created crystals using forges or something like that.

According to the literature, after the Sith war, when Ruusaan got glassed, there were only 2 or so sources of lightsabre crystals in the SW galaxy. Both of those planets were apparently blockaded by the imperials, as the actual crystals cost a lot of cash. After the Empire fell, the crystals became more common.

And Old, Its not that the blades of the Sith are made with artifical crystal, its that the crystals which make red blades have been prefered by the Sith for rather obvious reasons.

In other texts, most notably Lightsabers, crystals are found in volcanic vents on Yavin IV and even manufactured through some sort of furnace process involving the Force. If I, Jedi's ludicrous account can be believed, then any old diamond will work and (here's the ridiculous part) even a "cubit zarconia" can be used for at least a short time. Also, the planet "Adega" has widely been held to be a major source of lightsaber crystals.

Oh, Stravo, for the record, the planet is actually "Ilum".

I'm currently going through the CUSWE looking for planets that have/had lightsabre crystals. I'll put them up when I finish.

Dantooine had what, one small cave that had them?

Ilum on the other hand seemed to have lightsaber crystals coming out the ears.

EDIT: So 19 places out of a galaxy, at least a couple of which wouldn't be accesible in the clone wars (like the Alderaan asteroid). Yep, taking out Ilum would put a dent in the lightsaber crystal supply.

Actually, I believe I, Jedi had Corran using a diamond in ADDITION to a Corusca gem.

He interchanged a diamond and an emerald to change what the length was. The diamond and emerald were being used to focus the length of it.

He origionally used the fake gem though, which he only changed after it blew out on him just as he really needed it. Apparently it worked through testing, but that could be aything from switchingit on and going "yep that works" or anyting up to doing loads of exercises with it.

IIRC one of the comics that dealt with the really old republic (like 4000 years before ANH) said that certain crystals were better than others for lightsbres, so presumably the planet under attack was a major source for those crystals.

Might it also be a good explanation of why Jedi Lightsabers are only blue or green.

Any official in-universe explanation to Mace Windu's purple blade? Special crystals? Colored filter lens at the blade emitter? ;)

"Purple" crystals (you can have one those in KOTOR 1&2, but they're not very easy to find.)

He just used a different kind of crystal. Jaina Solo's lightsaber is also purple, in the EU, and purple lightsabers are also possible in KOTOR.
