Ok here's how I've figured the battle of Kashyyyk goes (note there's also events that are not part of battle per se but are connected to it (and of course EP3 spoilers)
- the RAS Protector is ambushed and captured by Trandoshan forces with the aid of separtist battledroids
- CIS forces land covertly into Kashyyyk, but are detected by Wookiee hunting party
- Wookiee General Tarfful is captured in ambush before he can get word of CIS forces and Trando slave camp to Republic.
- the Protector liberated by Republic forces, hints of a Tradoshan/CIS alliance are detected.
- separtist forces attack Corusant, count Dooku is killed
- A Republic commando land on Kashyyyk and free general Tarfful (Gen Grievous detected on Kashyyyk
- Wookie forces with aid of Republic forces destroy a CIS warship. Republic forces lead by Master Yoda land on Kashyyyk
- Republic forces defeat the CIS army
- Clonetroopers turn on the Jedi, but Master Yoda flees with aid of the Wookies. End of Battle of Kashyyyk.
How correct is this?

Not reading it to avoid spoilers, but Kashyyyk has three y's...

Looks accurate to me. Its seems to be a really pointless battle. They invade the planet for slaves (never mind that they decide to capture slave that are a huge dangerous predatory species...not good)?!!! The have countless battle droids.
I'm thinking that the real reason for that battle is to lure a powerful Jedi, such as a Council member to an out of the way planet, to isolate them for order 66.
I can't think of any other plausible reason for the sepratists to involve themselves with the Wookies. Their planet isn't useful for manufacturing, is of limited political importance, and is far from the Core. Unless its a hyperspace jump off point it seems to have little real value.
Question have Wookie soldiers even been serving in the Republic Army?

Well the slave element was probaly a smoke screen (it's what Tradoshan do from time to time anyway).
while probaly correct about the real reason for the attack.
and it's Wookiee with two e's

Republic assault ship
and a small correction into last post I meant that the Slave element was smoke screen on top the "real" smoke screen.

Potential Spoilers:
According to the ROTS ICS, Kashyyyk is actually a strategic location. A group of Wookie hyperspace cartographers know as the Claatuvac maintain a database of that contains many long lost routes that are not part of the official Republic charts. Taking Kashyyyk would give the Separatists a decisive edge in hyperspace route planning. Enabling them to disrupt and control galactic trade and communications.

this explains why the CIS would select Kashyyyk and would explain why the Republic leaders don't suspect a trap.

The official non-Hyperspace newsletter Homing Beacon had this to say about the battle of Kashyyyk:
The Homing Beacon wrote:The homeworld of the Wookiee species, Kashyyyk serves as a major navigation point for the entire southwestern quadrant of the galaxy. For this reason, it becomes the site of ongoing battles between the Republic and the Separatists.
