Balance of the Force?

Excuse my newness or lack of any exact quote, but I remember fairly clearly in... was it Ep1? Maybe 2, but anyway... I remember when Obiwan or Windu said something along the lines that 'Anakin will bring balance to the force'. What the heck does that mean? My personal impression was 'Uh.. wait. So there's a 10,000 Jedi, and 2 Sith. So he's saying there's going to be a lot of bodybags...?'
What do you think that meant?

To me, the Chosen One wipes the slate clean by eliminating the long stagnant Jedi Order and finally destroying the Sith, allowing for a new start.

I think Anakin started the job, then Luke finished it, if we take Spanky's interpretation.
EDIT: Actually take that back, it was still Anakin after all who put Palpatine down. Luke and Leia would be part of the new beginning after wiping the slatae clean.

Anakin would also eliminate the Sith (and in a way, the Jedi) through his self-sacrifice.
Also it was more Luke alone that was the beginning of a new Jedi era.

The Jedi Order goes hand in hand with the Old Republic. Old, arrogant, corrupt, impotent. The Sith are...well evil. So you have an unbalance in the Force in which the two 'groups' of Force users are trying their hardest to fuck shit up.
To 'balance' the Force, the Jedi had to stop being arrogant fucks and the Sith who had intertwinded themselves deep into the corruption of the Republic had to be destroyed.
Since the Jedi Order was too old and stuck in it's ways, the only way to brng them out of arrogance would be to start over, such as the purge. The Sith just needed an asskicking.

Luke was probably the chosen one. i believe that the Jedi order just misinterpreted the prophecy. I think we already had a thread on this though

No, Luke was the Son of the Sun, the beginning of the new era. Anakin was still the Chosen One because it was still him who finally sacrificed himself to eliminate the Sith.
EDIT: Oh wait, I think Son of the Sun is an old draft name for what would eventually become the Chosen One. But my point still stands that Anakin was the Chosen One, not Luke.
