Which would you rather have? An Eclipse or...

...it's equivalent in Star Destroyers?

I'd personally take the Eclipse, because not only would you have sufficient firepower to handle most things in the Star Wars galaxy, but you'd have that intimidation factor. Although all of those Star Destroyers would pack a lot of firepower, and could cover more area.

Fleet of Star Destroyers definately. More ships to control my empire.

A fleet. Big flagships are nice, but you can't lose every ship in the fleet to sabotage or mutiny, while a big ship is really putting all of your eggs in one basket. Additionally, a fleet is more flexible in what threats it can respond to.

Stupid question.

Who am I? What area of space do I have to control? What other fleet assets do I have? How big an area of space do I have to control? Who are my enemies? How big is their space? What area do they control?

I mean if we more or less have equal forces and limited resources, one Eclipse is probably going to be easier to maintain and crew then hundreds more ISD's. And it would give a clear advantage with its gravity well generators, superlaser and heavy firepower.

Yea what he said, would help to know what situation where in here. Am I an Empeor? One guy? I mean, an all hounesty, If I'm just a single person being offered a ship, I would take something realtivly small vs a city sized Eclipse.

Volume-wise or firepower-wise? Because in the last case you'll get a lot of Star Destroyers.

I would perfer the Star Destroyers mainly for the flexibility it would give me. If I'm allowed in the swap to get one Executer that I think I would do so. The Eclipse is pretty much over kill to begin with and its only one ship. i could sent the equivilent Star Destroyers into flanking attacks ect that The one huge ship would never allow me. Sure the massive Eclipse would be nigh unto invincible but it ties up me into simple frontal assaults as a tactic as the ship is so large and visible.

Fleet of Star Destroyers. The Eclipse is nice, but putting all your assets into one ship is never a good idea. No ship is "unsinkable", afterall. ISD-II's and possibly a few upgraded VSD's, since they can go in the atmosphere. That, and the dropship compliments of my ISD's would give me the flexibility to land lots of troops if need be. Hence, the subjugation factor. I don't want to vaporize a continent unless I have to. Also, the ISD's could be used in more creative battle tactics than one ship can offer.

Equivilant fleet of Star Detsroyers. Enemies would have to face multiple targets. Imperial Is or IIs can be replaced much easier than losing a single eclipse.

Exactly, in fact, worst case senario, if your SD's start breaking down, you can cannibalize a SD to fix the others since they're the same part.

Brilliant idea. Similar to how a modern carrier Air Group will cannibalize spare fighters to keep their operational ones running. Conversely, destroyed or crippled SD's can be salvaged for what parts that are still any good.
Just an aside, the OP stated "Star Destroyers", so that doesn't restrict what class, correct? Otherwise, I'd have to trade my Victories in for more ISD-II's.

My bad for not being more specific. The situation is that you are a Fleet Admiral (or the equivalent in the Empire), and you are offered a choice between the two. Your objective is basically to protect, expand and defend the Empire. Let's assume that this scenario takes place at the time of the New Republic springing up, and the Mon Calamari are producing their cruisers. I'm not too sure about what happens in that timeline, but assume the Emperor assigns you, along with many other high ranking military leaders, to defeat this New Republic uprising.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me.

Fleet. Now, if my objective was to completely annihilate an enemy power, I'd probably go for the Eclipse, and take them down planet by planet. But it isn't, so I'm not.

It depends. If I'm an admiral or some such I take the fleet because a fleet beats the crap out of a single ship of equivalent firepower.

However, if it's just going to be a personal "pimp mobile" kinda think, I'd take the eclipse because when you're crusiing around the galaxy picking up chicks a fleet doesn't impress them as much as a big as an eclipse along side, with the front bouncing up and down like a kangaroo on crack, and a sweet smooth voice saying "Come to the Dark Side!"
Of course... seeing as how I don't have the sweet smooth voice, I think I'd just take the fleet and BDZ any planet I can find...

In a straight up battle between an Eclipse and its equal weight in ISDs, the ESSD wins. It has enough sufficent defenses it can weather attacks and reduce the enemy. For every ISD destroyed, the ISDs loose firepower. For the ESSD to be destroyed, you gotta wear it down heavily.

fleet. mobility is very key. Ill sacrifice a few sds to distract your eclipse, and meanwhile bdz every planet of yours.

I guess it depends. From the little I've seen of the Eclipse from what I perused in the book store comic book section, it seems like it's an almost unstoppable beast. I guess it would depend on what my missions are. As a flagship, definitely the Eclipse. With that sucker I could wipe out life as we know it. But if I'm set out to pacify or babysit a sector, a fleet of SDs would be better suited.

If I were to wipe out a rebel fleet? Give me the eclipse, turn on the grav wells and set for ramming speed!

Hmmm, expanding the Empire and holding off/smashing Rebel fleets? I'm gonna go with the Eclipse here I think. My enemy may outnumber me, but i've got the only ship capable of taking down planetary shields. I mean sure they can get to my planets when i'm not there, but with the planetary shields up, who cares? I have a ship they can't realistically defeat and a territory they can't harm. I win.

Plus, how key is maneuverability when the primary tactic used is 'the brawl'?
That'd be like Andre the Giant vs 10 midgets. Funny to watch, but it's as close to a foregone conclusion as we're likely to get.

The Eclipse is just too big, it's like a DeathStar. As soon as you have one every large and small faction is going to be after you to either steal it or destroy it.

And although, with it's awsome firepower, you wouldn't need to fear much, it would just get to be a real pain to constantly fend off smaller attack forces after the big ÜberShip on the block.

I dunno, that kinda sounds like a plus to me. If everyone were to keep coming after me in my insanely powerful battleship, it just saves me the trouble of trying to chase them down. Can you imagine trying to force an engagement in SW? Between the high accelerations and hyperdrive's ability to zip across the galaxy in a day or two... heck i'd tell the New Republic where I am to ENCOURAGE them to come after me.

As for possible sabotage.... well, them's the risks I guess?

I'm taking the Eclipse, just so that I can compensate for something.

Oh god not that 'Imperium' thing? Hounestly, for the last time, the Concept for it is AWSOME! But who ever drew that design for it should be shot...

I'd take the fleet. Sure, they both have advantages and disadvantages (all your eggs in one basket but mass firepower/terror vs less firepower but mobility/flexibility), but on balance i guess that purely for the showing off, a fleet of hundreds of ISD's looks more impressive than a floating city. But then again...
