Jedi Postcognition?

Jedi has precognitive powers which are somewhat accurate (always in motion, the future is).

They also seem to have a remote viewing sense.

Can a Jedi see into the past and view remotely an event already transpired?[/i]

I'm not sure whether regular Jedi can do it but Quinlan Vos' people, the Kiffar, has the innate ability of psychometry which is postcognition by touch. By being a Jedi, his psychometic abilities were better than other Kiffar, IIRC.

Personally I believe they call can have a certain amount of postcognitive abilites. If they can see into the future, why not the past?

Well Yoda said they can in ESB plus (KOTOR spoilers)Revan had visions of his past life which were integral parts of the KOTOR story

Luke did it in the TTT when Lando prompted him about that cigar smoker guy. Also Corran Horn was able to see back into the Clone Wars on the fate of his Grandfather, though that was helped along A'legos or what ever his name was.

I don't know the details of Corran's case, but wasn't this one just a case of enhancing memory recall? Corran might also be a case of telepathy from Elegos' long memory IIRC.

Elegos was using a form of telepathy called memnii. The Caamasi have learned how to share these with other Caamasi and with force-users. Memnii are incredibly strong memories from a person's past. Elegos was sharing a memnii that he go tfrom his uncle, Ylenic, who was the jedi who saw Corran's grandfather die. Since the Caamasi can only share memnii with other caamasi and force-users, I assume it's a technique involving the force.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. While they're probably not going see pasts that were once possible but now "dead," it is possible they'll only see snippets that might by themselves paint a false picture of the past.

Corran had a vision about his Grandfathers death before he met Elgos

So I would say that Jedi do have some limited ability to see the past, it all depends on how much the Force wants to show them

I would have thought that they were more past memories resurfacing than visions.

yes and no since those things can't really be seperated also the POV was outside the body so that suggest visions triggered by past events.

the KOTOR part was more of flashbacks than being able to examine past events using the force

And what was causing the flashbacks? He didn't suffer typical amnesia, you know.

In fact, he didn't suffer amnesia at all. The Jedi gave him an artificial personality complete with fake memories. Not to mention that when you first confide in Bastila about your visions, she's taken aback - completely surprised by it. Not to mention that when you land on the planets to grab the starmap you're given a vision from the Force about the matter.

past memories, you mean like Dune or The Crow? sweet!

*Luke is hanging around with his students on Yavin 4"

Jedi students: "Master Skywalker, give us a vision of the past!"

Luke: "To offset your spectre of the future?"

Jedi students: "..."

Luke: "Okay, just kidding, here goes."

*he goes into deep meditation*

Luke looks into the past: "Hmmm... Master Qui Gon Jinn, no Grandpa, celibacy, Jedi Temple on Coruscant, mom's insane outfits, dad's bad pickup lines, Senator Jar Jar Binks sold us out, midichlorians..."

*he breaks out of his trance in a cold sweat, breathing heavily"

Jedi students: "Well? Master what did you see?!"

Luke: "I-I'm alright... you'd best get on with your exercises..."

Wouldn't the term "postcognition" mean something as mundane as just accessing your regular memory (or as they like to call it, "remembering stuff")? Precognition is special cause no one can see into the future, theoretically.

Picture it:

Yavin 4 students: "Master Skywalker, can you show us an example of postcognition?"

Luke: "Yeah sure. This morning I had a bantha burger and boy was it good."

Damn, I knew X was going to come back to bite me on the ass!

(see, you don't need to be a Jedi to enjoy postcognition!)

On a more serious note, I wonder if it isn't possible that the past might also be a bit clouded like the future. Not because it is ever in motion, like the future, but perhaps even the phenomenon known as "the dust of time" also affects "postcognating" force users as well? I am suggesting they may be able to see events that happened in the past, but the longer ago it happened, the cloudier it gets. Ideas?

This ability is known as "memory."
