Palpatine and David Brin: Busom Buddies? (Spoilers)

On Mike's hatemail page, http://www.stardestroyer.net/Empire/HateMail/Brin.html, he discusses an essay by David Brin. The essay concerns itself with the morality and politics of star wars and star trek. Has anyone else noticed (with amusement) the similarities between Brin's critisisms of the Jedi and Palpatine's in the novelization?
