DS1 Tractor beam control...

It's just occured to me after watching the original trilogy again recently; when Obi-Wan goes to deactivate the tractor beam - the control readouts are in ENGLISH.
So, the question now is: Does this indicate that the English language and written English exist in the SW galaxy?
Obviously English is not the common written text (numerous other written scripts, including the adverts on Coruscant, were in non-English languages), but the Death Star... you know how it was Tarkin's pet project. Maybe it could be that English exists in SW, but is an obscure or rarely used language, which Tarkin liked, and made it the language of the Death Star...
Or whatever.
Since everything seen in the movies must be taken as "documentary" canon...

I read that Lucas wanted it to be written in an alien script, but the studio wouldn't let him.

The actors speak English, not Basic. That way we can understand them. As the tractor beam power control was plot-essential, it was dubbed in English.

Or subtitled, as it were.

In every other instance, the writing was in some strange dialect. It was either overlooked by Lucas, or purposely "dubbed" so viewers would understand what was happening.

Or not. Or maybe it is. Heck, who knows. With hundreds of languages here on earth, multiplied by HOW many planets in the GFFA? That's a lot of languages!
They have diners, for god's sake! Why not English?

I agree with Smi!
BTW Totenkopf it's really not my business but using the sign of a WWII SS Panzer Division is not surely welcomed by everyone.
I know they weren't as cruel as they pictured them, they fought here in Hungary valiantly to break the blockade of Budapest.
But on the other hand it's still an SS sign and it may disturb other persons feelings.
No flaming just an advice.

Funny enough, if we were to go by Mike Wong's Conquest, then there would be a very good reason for English existing (albeit as a scarceley used language predating the Republic) in SW.
Further proof that Conquest needs to be made SW canon. (Boy wouldn't that piss off the Trekkies. "Hey guys, it's official - The Empire invaded your beloved Federation and were kicking their asses until internal bickering fucked them up.")

Ok, so if English isn't basic, then what does basic look like?

I assume that Basic is the text you see when Luke looks through his macrobinoculars in ANH.

Well, Dr. Saxton has said all that I think can really be said:
