ROTS timeframe

Post by PainRack »

Does anyone know approximately how long were the events depicted in ROTS?

The pacing of the film was so fast that it just seemed that Padme was thin Monday, fat Tuesday, bloated by Friday and giving what appears to be a naturally induced birth by Sunday..............

I got the impression that a period of weeks passed, but that's just a subjective impression. I need to watch the show again to get a better feel.

Padme was never thin. She wore concealing clothes right up until the end, when it didnt' matter.

Really? When she decleared that she was pregnant, that clearly wasn't maternity dress she was wearing. Later on when all the mushy dialogue began to appear, her figure was also not noticably as fat as she would appear later, when Obiwan talked to her.

I was trying to figure out the pacing also, because Padme did go from not obviously pregnant to very pregnant throughout the movie. The only ares where I could see large periods of time passing would be around the opera scene. Also, after Yoda is sent to Kashyyk the impression is that he was not there long, but that could have been an extended campaign. This would tie in with Anakin's complaints that he is being shut out by the council, if there were other missions between Kashyyk and OB1s that he was left out of.

I think one problem with that though is Greivous got orders to move the seperatist leaders soon after landing, and OB1 was there in time to see them leave. Doesn't really leave much time to progress. I'll be seeing it again today and will try to follow the timeline more closely...figure out if there is any place where weeks or months could have gone bye.

It's not unprecedented for a woman to conceal her pregnancy throughout its entire duration, or nearly all of it. Of course it didn't look like a maternity dress when she declared that she was pregnant; wearing clothes specifically designed for a pregnant woman wouldn't do much to conceal her being a pregnant woman.

As for the OP, I think a little less than a month would probably be most accurate.

And a question: was RotS 20 or 19 years before ANH?

I was making the point that we saw Padme in a rather snug outfit at the begining........... It was only after Obiwan met her was she visibly bulging and had no choice but to wear loose clothing. Before that, when Anakin destroyed the temple, she was noticably fatter, but the clothing could conceal it.

After watching the film 3 times and reading the script, I can discern that ROTS takes place over a timeframe of five days.

Day 1 - Battle of Coruscant. Sidious tells Grievous to move the Separatist Council from Utapau to Mustafar. Anakin has his nightmare about Padme.

Day 2 - Anakin is appointed to the Jedi Council, and his told to spy on Palpatine. Yoda goes to Kashyyyk. Anakin meets Padme ("you're sounding like a Separatist"). Palpatine recounts to Anakin the Tragedy of Darth Plaguies the Wise at night.

Day 3 - Battle of Kashyyyk begins. Obi-Wan travels to Utapau. Anakin meets Padme again ("I'm not the Jedi I should be"). Obi-Wan duels and kills General Grievous. Palpatine reveals himself as Darth Sidious. Death of Mace Windu. Anakin joins the Sith and is renamed Darth Vader. Vader purges the Jedi Temple. Order 66 is carried out throughout the galaxy.

Day 4 - Vader meets Padme, and then leaves for Mustafar. Bail finds Obi-Wan and Yoda, then brings them to Coruscant. The Republic is reorganized into the First Galactic Empire, under Emperor Palpatine. Obi-Wan and Yoda watch the Jedi Temple surveillance video. Vader slaughters the Separatist Council. Obi-Wan meets Padme. Padme travels to Mustafar. Yoda duels with Sidious in the Senate. Obi-Wan and Vader duel on Mustafar. Obi-Wan flees with Padme.

Day 5 - Palpatine rescues Vader. Luke and Leia are born, and Padme dies. Darth Vader is reborn. Obi-Wan and Yoda go into exile. Padme's funeral.

Vader must meet Padme late at night on Day 3, since when Obi-Wan visits her looking for Anakin he asks "When was the last time you saw him," and she answers, "Yesterday."

Other than that, this seems reasonable.

Reasoning for why Anakin would be rescued by Palpatine the day after his defeat? You don't seriously propose he would sit on that lava bank for a day, do you?

Besides, the novelization makes it clear Palpatine was arriving even as Obi-Wan left.

I am certain that outfit wasn't snug. IIRC, that was her "Leia hairdo" outfit- and it was a long flowing robe that betrayed virtually no curves. I'll know for certain tommorow (second viewing, finally!).

Yeah, his personal shuttle, not surprised. Though it's interesting to note the shot of his shuttle escorted by three V-Wings approaching Coruscant in the trailer was cut from the film, we still see in the film the V-Wings with his shuttle as it approached the Imperial Rehab Centre (script name). It leaves it open whether they accompanied him to Mustafar or not, and if so, their hyperspace rings must've been pretty sweet too. Unless Palpatine took a capital ship there and the shuttle was just used to get from Coruscant to the ship and to Mustafar and back again.

Its also possible they were just patrolling the space above Coruscant, and joined up with the shuttle when it reverted from hyperspace.

By the way, is it ever mentioned where Mustafar actually is (outer rim, core, etc.) ?

I'm pretty sure the novel says Outer Rim, or maybe Palpatine in the film.

Well, it's not anything we've seen outside of the series before. In ANH, going from Tatooine to Alderaan (Outer Rim to Core) was pretty much a day trip.

Of course, in the novelization, it states that Yoda and Obi-wan begin their duel at the exact same time, so that would mean that the shuttle could make it from Coruscant to the outer rim in the space of less than an hour (factoring in the time span of the Sidious confrontation, plus lift off from the planet and the passage through hyperspace compared to the entire span of the final duel.)

This doesnt seem right, that's way too fast even for a ship faster than the Falcon. At the absolute most, Anakin/Obi wasnt more than thirty minutes longer than the Yoda/Sids duel, and yet the Emperor is landing just as the fight finishes. That would mean the hyperspace transit time was less than twenty minutes.

I amy be wrong about the fights starting at the same time, but I believe that's what it says in the novel.

Well, I feel that there're some points in the film where time could had went by off-screen.

For example, the time in between the recovery of Palpatine and the mission to capture General Grievious, time between Order 66 and Obiwan and Yoda returning to Coruscant.
