Could the Death Star Be A Prototype?
I was watching a little tv on some engineering show and it hit me: couldn't the Death Star that we see at the end of the movie be a prototype? It is a weapons platform after all, which normally has to undergo numberous testings to discover any weaknesses etc. If it were a prototype, it would fit right into the time line..

Could've sworn I'd seen this discussed before in about five different threads, but, since I'm headed out the door in two minutes to do laundry, Saxton has some interesting thoughts on this.Fire Fly wrote:I was watching a little tv on some engineering show and it hit me: couldn't the Death Star that we see at the end of the movie be a prototype? It is possible, afterall the Death Star in ROTS' superlaser dish is too small in proportion to the sphere and set too close to the equator.

Someone should take an actual screenshot from the relevant scene in the film (obtained by *cough cough* gal means of course) and use that. Dr S. is using a frame from the comic as a placeholder for now.

Do we have anyone who suffered through the book which featured the Maw Installation and it's DS-Prototype remember if there were any descriptions which would disqualify or verify the theory that what was captured by the fledgling Empire was simply towed to this facility, where Tarkin used it for research? Can't have something like this lying around, after all, and it's a skeletal structure with a main gun, which as I recall is the same as the one we saw.

Does anyone recall if there is any evidence of construction? It's hardly conclusive, but I don't remember any prefab bits floating nearby or other support structures. But hey, the DS2 didn't have those either.
