Did Spoilers make a difference?

Post by Stravo »

To those not spoiled for the movie did you enjoy it more because you were not spoiled? Do you think it would have made a difference for you one way or the other?

For those who reveled in Spoilers did you find your enjoyment lacking or did it make a difference at all?

For me I am very happy I went in spoiler free because I actually gasped in surprise several times during the movie (ie. Padme's force choking, Obi Wan slicing and dicing Anakin in one swipe of his blade) and did not expect some of the plot twists.

Not knowing what was coming made me feel more like I was wacthing Wars the way I did as a child. I had no clue of anything going into the first two films (Unfortunately Robert Ebert gave away the majority of the plot twsist for ROTJ - the fat bastard) and I knew every aspect of TPM and AOTC which I feel made things worse than they already were.

This film was fresh and exciting for me.

It definitely coloured my expectations to the point when I don't think I got weepy eyed at all. Because I already knew what was going to happen, and how it was going to happen too. There were so many points where I should have thought "holy shit, he did not just DO THAT!" but because I read it in the novel or in the spoiler thread, I felt little impact. The highest impact ROTS gave me was leaving me breathless at times.

On the other hand, reading the novel made me feel like I experienced the story already. I'm not sure if the novel should count as a spoiler though.

I was doused in spoilers, but it really bother me when the movie rolled around. In fact, it helped me understand Anakin's fall to the Dark Side better (read the novelization). THere were parts I wanted to see, but didnt, like the delegation of 2,000, but I knew that was going to happen, so it didnt bother me. The only let down from the spoilers is that I had too high hopes for the arrest scene, at least the early part. I was hoping that the three other masters wouldnt go down quite as fast, or at lest their deaths would be cooler (novelization again) but overall, nothing about the movie was ruined for me. I do not regret spoilering.

For me, knowing what was going to happen made the film much more tragic in my eyes. It was like watching a train that you know is going to crash, but you wish that they would make a different decision to avoid disaster. For instance, when we see Obi Wan stow away in Padme's ship, I knew immediately that he was going to get her killed. The subsequent dialog between Padme and Anakin had a heightened tension because I was just waiting for Anakin to see his old master and lose it completely.

Not really, no.

I'm generally more interested in story construction and details than I am big surprises, so spoilers rarely bother me.

(The one exception being Serenity, but I dived in and spoiled myself there, so I can't complain... fair warning for other Firefly fans... DON'T.)

I spoilered myself a huge amount, though not as much as most. I think my biggest loss was not having the Death Star scene come as a surprise, although I still think that it was underdone. Other than that, it was mostly just being able to look at the screen and think: Venator... ARC-170... Lucrehulk-class... Providence-class, etc

The other stuff I learned about, such as Dooku's demise, Palpatine's capture, the duel with the Jedi Masters, etc, wasn't a big loss when it wasn't new.

Absolutely they did. I really regret knowing about things like Anakin killing the Younglings. I mean, people were visually shocked in the theatre after that scene.

I found that I enjoyed the movie more because of the spoilers. I believe that some of the scenes would've been slightly confusing due to the trims that had been made.

Nope. I knew almost the entire series of events but had no idea how they were acted or played out, which in the end makes the difference.

I still enjoyed the movie throughly.

Nah. It was a neat movie to watch. We all knew the basic elements anyways.

Seeing nearly all of the space battle scenes in trailers pissed me off. If I hadn't seen any shots of the space battle I know I would have appreciated it a lot more.

Spoilers did help in one instance at least.

My mother is a pretty big Star Wars fan (due partly to my influence, though for years whenever my father said he loved her she answered "I know"), and considering how disturbing she finds some sci fi events (mostly revolving around bugs being put in ears), I felt obligated to inform her of the scene involving Anakin and the younglings. After seeing the movie, she thanked me for warning her, saying that if she hadn't been expecting it, she would have been a little too freaked out when it happened.

Vader and the younglings and Vader's immolation were the only two scenes I really regret being spoiled for, because both were so powerful and both were unexpected (the latter in its severity, at least).

Oh, and Grievous' death. I think I spent that fight waiting for Obi-Wan to shoot him, rather than enjoying it.

Other than that, it didn't bother me too much. And since the spoilers were what got me pumped for the movie in the first place, I think that, for me at least, they were a good thing.

I think it did. The movie didn't impress me: since I pretty much knew everything that was going to happen, all that was really new to me was the cinematography - which was bad. :)

No. It was great, and it was Lucas' direction, the editing and John Williams' soundtrack that made it great.
