Hostility over analysis?

I'm currently engaged in a discussion at BadAstronomy wherein a number of posters (well, two, really) are actively hostile regarding our little hobby here at SD.net. Why is this? Why are people so hostile regarding the hobbies of different segments of fandom? Why do they seem to think that being an ethusiast for certain things is ok, while other things are a "waste of time"? More to the point, if it's a "waste of time," why bother saying as much? Why go out of your way to make your opinion, which is obviously going to be disagreed with, known on such a subjective matter? Does it relate to simple high-school bullying mentality? "I need to feel better than you"?

Lots of question marks in that, but it really does boggle my mind sometimes.

It is done because the state of Nick and Jessica Simpson's marriage simply doesn't hold our attention for any great length of time. This occupies the space that that would fill for 'normal' people.

I don't think we're missing much, but to each is own.

Apperently, I'm a "gay nerd boy" or something of the ilk because I dont watch American Idol and go huntin'. I guess people find that offensive.
