The AOTC asteroid sequence that should have never been

In the ICS it states that the Jedi aetherspike fighters speed is 12,000 km/hr (i believe), and that the Slave 1s speed was a lesser 1,000 km/hr, in the AOTC asteroid chase scene the jedi fighter and the slave ones speed is the same throughtout the entire chase, even though the jedi fighter is twelve times faster than it.

I understand that going through such a violent asteroid field at 12,000 km/hr is suicide, but its ridiculus to think that when you are being chased by a fully armed and lethal spacecraft you would try to outrun it because you have just a good of chance of being smashed against against a GIANT piece of floating rock then being blasted inot space dust. I wouldve sure as hell tried to get out of there as fast as i can if i was being chased by slave one.

He went into the asteroids because he couldn't beat the fighter in a flat out race. It evened the odds with his massive firepower.

No, their atmospheric speed is vastly different, but their acceleration isn't that far off. An Aethersprite only has twice the acceleration of the Slave One. Their atmospheric speeds are radically different because Slave One is about as aerodynamic as a brick.

Mr.B: No, Jango went into the asteroid field to cover his ass, so nobody would find him. He didnt even know that Obi-Wan was folowing him.

MoO: I suppose your right, still you claim he has double the acceleration, so he shoudl have still been able to outrun him.

Jango noticed Obi-Wan almost as soon as he was out of hyperspace. He also correctly guessed soon after that the only way he could have been followed was if there was a tracking bug on Slave I's hull.

Slave ones acceleration is 2500g's, the Delta-7's is 5000g.

Obi-Wan could track him through hyperspace, it stands to reason that he could detect him a long range in real space as well. Jango could not run or hid, so he needed to at least disable Obi-Wan so he could land to remove the thing.

sea skimmer: in the novel of AOTC when jango finds out about the tracking device he sends an electrical charge throughout the hull and destroys it.so ha you bug weasel

Anyway, those are atmospheric speeds, and in space, aerodynamics don't matter.

Try to visualize yourself in Obi-Wan's boots. You're piloting a vessel with superior speed and maneuverability. You're trying to follow somebody and keep him in your sights. Do you:
  1. Push the throttle to the max and zoom right past him?
  2. Back off and match speeds?
Obviously, you back off and match speeds. Then he flies into a hollow asteroid. Do you:
  1. Push the throttle to the max and crash into either him or the wall?
  2. Back off to a safe speed and continue following him?
Obviously, you back off to a safe speed and continue following him. You fly out of the asteroid and he's gone. Suddenly, he's right on your tail, blasting away with repeating guns that pulverize asteroids bigger than your ship and fire at a rate of hundreds of shots per minute. Do you:
  1. Push the throttle to the max in an effort to put more distance between you and him, even though that will reduce your maneuverability and it would take a long time to get out of weapons range?
  2. Try to out-maneuver him?
I would think you'd try to outmaneuver him rather than trying to run away in a relatively straight line (remember that if you're running away at greater speed, the same burst from a maneuvering jet will produce a smaller angle change from the perspective of the pursuer).

He scores a hit, and then launches a missile to finish you off. This time, there's little choice. You instinctively firewall the throttle, and try to get away. Is this consistent with the film? Yes. Look at how far away the explosion is when we switch to the view from inside Slave-1.

the basics of aireal combat. Very well explained, as always Darth Wong.

The reason why the astroid chase exists is that since Obi-Wan was following the Slave 1 to find the Commerce Guild/Federation base on Genosis he had to go slow. You cant follow a person if your lightyears ahead of him.

But you follow best by following from in front! Standard imperial catch phrase (X-wing Wraith Squadron). lol
