Why didn't they just shoot him?

Post by Bug-Eyed Earl »

Why the hell didn't Padme, Panaka, or any of the queen's guard just SHOOT Darth Maul when he first appeared and not left the Jedi to fight him? I can think of several reasons that will probably be stated, but none of them hold water to me. So what do you think?

First off the scare factor. A LONE person in a black cloak with a fucking demon looking face is staring you down. You can clearly see they hesitated. In that moment Qui Gon said they would handle it. Not to mention they had already encountered Maul before and KNEW he would be there on Naboo. Also they witnessed two Jedi, Master and a Padawan, waltz through theed DEFLECTING laser bolts from droids, that theoretically should be more precise at shooting. So, shoot at black clad warrior that could possibly deflect bolts back (I know his sabre wasnt out yet, but give me a fucking break will ya) and possibly getting your ass charred, or let the Jedi handle the situation. They'd been right so far.

The fact that all that was likely to get them was a blaster bolt in the teeth? Unless their pre-battle briefings were utter shit, they should know a Sith is prowling around. Plus having a Jedi tell you to move your ass will inspire most to haul ass not stop to take potshots.

He'd have had his saber out and ready before they finished deciding to act, let alone raise their blasters. The force would have warned him of any intention to fire. Result would be a couple dead people and Maul just fine.

I don't know how high up the ladder Maul had gotten, but also remember that Vader was able to absorb blaster bolts unharmed. Maul also would have been able to Force Push the lot of them to the ground, as the guards had seen the Jedi do to multitudes of BattleDroids.

Attacking Maul as a unit they might have been able to bring him down, but they would have been so badly chewed up there would not have been enough of a viable force left to take the Viceroy out; they needed to conserve their strength for that other-- actually the primary- mission. And why not believe that two Jedi can handle one freaky scary guy? They'd done everthing right so far...

Because Maul could have killed them all through a variety of force related ways.

Yeah, wouldn't that have been cool? :D

This thread has made me think that I'd like to see the aftermath of a battle between a force user and a large group of non-droid combatants. Can you picture in Episode III some panning shots of dozens of clonetroopers (or some other soldiers) all inexplicably trashed. Then at the end of the pan there's Dooku.

Granted it would've been more cool to SEE Maul (there's some good stuff with him in the Dark Horse comics) do it but it would be nice if it is reiterated that it isn't just droids that force users can stomp en mass.

Just before they returned to Naboo Mace told Qui-Gon something along the lines of "you must solve the mystery of this sith". As such i would assume that Quigon had told Padime and the Naboo security ti make themselves scarse in such an event. it certainly would have came up in the pre-battle briefing.

Darth Maul is fast enough, and deadly enough, to have been able to deflect their weapons fire. In Shadow Hunter, he is disappointed to miss with a blaster deflection by a few centimeters. He is generally much more accurate. Note that this is well beyond the observed capabilities of Luke Skywalker in RotJ, and probably in excess even of Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon in TPM.

The impression I got from the Darth Maul comic by Dark Horse was, in summation:

"Look how utterly bad@$$ Maul is! He's kicking @$$! He'll kick your @$$ too if you're not careful, wanker!"

Sigh. Interesting enough, and I guess it really does underscore how much of an advantage a Force-awakened combatant has over 'mundane' combatants. But if he was that totally bad@$$ then how could Padawan Kenobi cut him in half after a full second or two in which Maul could have actively reacted?

No... I won't start this discussion again. Uh, IT WAS A RHETORICAL QUESTION! HONEST! :) Ah, the mysteries of Star Wars....

That being said, if we take the comic as even semi-canon, then Naboo security vs. Maul would result in a lot of dead Naboo. Woo!
The Jedi asked, "What is balance for me as a servant of the Light?" The Master replied,"Balance is not what you seek. For you it is accepting that destruction is a part of the universe."

Kenobi had much better relfexes and training than your avverage Joe on the streets. Add to that Maul got sloppy and Kenobi got lucky.

My assumption was that after killing Obi-Wan's master Maul got cocky, that and he never expected Obi-Wan to be able to get himself out of the shaft he was dangeling in. Maul hated Jedi, he wanted to toy with Obi-Wan a bit.

Why did Maul just walk around the pit Obi-Wan was hanging from and toy with him? He had other shit to do like oversee the invasion of the battle droid army.
