Before the Lightsaber?

Is there anything we know about what weapons were used by the Jedi and Sith before the introduction of Lightsabers? Did they use Metal Swords instead?

Using KOTOR and the comics as evidence, before lightsabres it was vibroblades, and before vibroblades, it was straight swords. Some Sith still used swords when lightsabres came into use, IIRC.

IIRC, before the common lightsabre, there were ones that had belt-affixed power packs, which had a cord going to the hilt.

I'm busy looking for the exact source, but I do recall reading in some encyclopedia/timeline that lightsabers were originally developed 10,000 years before the Empire by the Jedi as a siege weapon. It was connected to a backpack power unit, and I may recall the blade was much longer due to this function.

Lightsabers in Golden Age of the Sith were depicted as using powerpack belts.

Glowsticks and "whoomy" noises made with the mouth.

Before that they used flashlights.

Before that, candles.

Before that, lit branches.

I'm still thinking of those two dumbasses who filled halogen lights with petrol and ignited it. Or something like that.

That aside- I'm still waiting for an in-universe explanation for why both Anakin's, Vader's (RotS:VD), Obi-Wan's, and all the other sabres have fixed socket ... connector thingies on the side of the sabre to click into the custom Jedi utiliy belt (or Vader's belt as the case may be)- and as such they don't swing around, yet these very same sabres in the OT are all of a sudden on D-rings, swinging relativel freely, and there's not a special belt or socket connector to be found. And these sockets are supposedly power units.

That really pisses my nitpicking ass off.

Perhaps they upgraded the battery? Or maybe they don't need as much power since the lightsabers don't get nearly as much use, and it's not like Yoda or Obi-wan would have had a set of power sockets on hand when they're fleeing for their lives into exile.

Form I is described as being used to handle your run-of-the-mill metallic sword, so that gives some more evidence towards the Jedi using them. I wonder, though, did the majority of Jedi use a single type of blade, i.e, katana, rapier?

Sabres, most likely.

They used fun noodles.

They were set on fire only in actual battle situations, but they could still leave pretty good welts.
