vaders vocabulator and "lungs"...were they really

ok, so we see that in Rots that vader gets his "vocabulator" and the thing that breathes for him. i can maybe see it being necessary in the beggining because he may have been charred inside from the lava fumes. My question is, why does he need them, 20 years later, especially when they have all those Bacta tanks and such? am i missing something here?

It's because bacta isn't the magic cure-all bullet that some people think it is.

For one thing, bacta really only helps accelerate healing, so it won't be of much help for wounds that have long since been received. It has no such rejuvination properties.

Bacta also can't cure injuries of that magnitude. I beleive it can't cure lung damage for the reason putting it in the lungs would drown the person you are trying to cure.

Vader appears to have been hurt horribly by his burns and the lava fumes. Remember after having his limbs triple amputated the ends of the wounds then suffered 3rd degree burns. His body was only kept alive by his rage and hate and the power of the dark side. It is uncertain if his voice was damaged but he was able to speak after Luke removed his mask so that seems unlikely.

It also cant regenerate.
A large part of his body is gone or hopelessly burned away, Bacta can help healing rates but isnt a cure-all as has been said by spanky the mod

Thank you for basically repeating what Isolder and I already said.

Sorry, i didnt understand that you pointed out that bacta cant regenerate, only heal & the lack of healable body parts left.

He is able to regenerate his lungs with the force in SotE, but is unable to sustain it, as his joy at doing so drives away the Dark Side focus he needs.

Actually he doesnt regenerate them, he simply gains the ability to ignore the pain and function with lumps of charcoal as lungs.

Well, he was choking and sputtering, and his voice was very quiet, so it must have been damaged to a degree.

Bacta is indeed pretty fucking magical, but recall that Darth Vader's injuries were not only severe, they were downright fatal. The man shouldn't even have been alive by that point.. large portions of his tissue were no longer tissue.

Even if bacta can stabilize and heal any injuries on a normal living person, bringing back someone from the brink of death, t's not really a surprise that a bacta soak wouldn't have helped a person whose injuries are beyond what would normally be fatal.

my thinking was that, he and obi-wan were flying all around that Lava and right on top of it... with no apparent damage. (yes i know there were shields on those droids, but there were still some super heated vapors in the area...). then he goes down and gets all screwed up. why should he all of a sudden get so much damage, that, even with all the medical technology star wars appears to posses, that he should still need the vocabulator and breather after 20 years... i know that theres the whole big thing about cloned body parts, but why couldnt they give him at least a lung transplant? i mean, if i were the emperor, and yes id like to have the option of having that controling factor on my minion, but to me, its a hazard that is too risky. Palpey doesnt know about luke, hes not gonna wanna lose his prodigy. what if some stray fire caught him by surprise and damaged the stuff controling his breathing... :?

Staving off the need for some "Search button" thing, I'll answer that the reason they weren't getting fried by the thermal convection and radiation coming off the lava is a combination of their Force abilities and proximity to it. When Anakin lost his concentration and got a whole lot closer, he went *fwoom*.
Does it really matter, really? They weren't on fire before. Now Anakin is on fire and screaming. Isn't it obvious that he's not a happy camper?

And, really, "what if some stray fire caught him by surprise and damaged the stuff controling his breathing"? I'd say the same thing that would happen if some "stray fire" caught any Jedi in the chest. They kinda rely on not getting shot.
Vader's more resilient considering he's wearing armor anyway.

Btw, I'm fairly certain I've seen all those questions before. Try the Search button, maybe?

Around here, you need a thick-ish skin. That was by no means a crucification or even a light flogging. If you didn't hear "hatfucker" or "cumstain" used, that was just a light correction. Lighten up.

It could be that the trama of his sudden injuries disturbed his connection to the force, and he was overwhelmed, so whatever protection he enjoyed from the heat was briefly lost, and it took to agony of burning alive to reconnect, via the dark side. If bacta were regenerative, it wouldn't change the fact that there was very little to regenerate; most of the tissue-specific DNA, like his skin, was lost and might take years to re-grow from what was left. Cloning and transplants might help, but perhaps that disturbs the midi-chlorians and force connecton more so than robotic replacements.

It could also be a cultural thing; cloned or transplaned parts are more offensive than mechanical replacements. He might desire the suffering, to encourage his connection to the dark side, and he might also be hoping to learn enough from Sidious' knowlege from Plageus to fix himself.

You're new around here, right? For a start, that wasn't crucifiction. It wasn't even hazing. You need words like 'dipshit', 'cocksucker' and 'asshat' for that.

As far as the Search button goes, see that panel of buttons on the top-right? See that button halfway between the Donate button and the Login/out button? Dat's da wun.

Conviniently, Service of Chaos quotes this passage Verbatim, so I don't have to type it up:
SotE wrote:It was time for another test.

Vader waved his hand over the motion sensitive controls of his chamber. The spherical controls of his chamber opened and the lit lifted with a hydraulic hiss and the escape of pressurised air. He sat exposed to the surrounding room, unprotected by the supermedicated and oxygenated field inside his chamber.

He concentrated on the injustice of his condition, on his hatred of Obi-Wan who had made him so. With the anger and hatred, the dark side of the Force permeated Vader.

For a moment, his ruined tissues altered, his scarred lungs and dead alveoli and constricted passages smoothed out and became whole. For a moment, he could breathe as normal beings breathed.

His sense of relief, his triumph, his joy at being able to do so drove the dark side away from him as surely as a light chases away shadows. The dark side eagerly consumed anger, but it was poisoned by happiness. It left him, and he could breathe no longer.

Oops  .
So the force can completely regenerate organs, nerve paths etc..

Interesting, wonder why Jedi healers have always been shown as so rare and weak :?

Rare and weak?

Barriss Offee, in half an hour in some dingy back room on Ansion was able to reverse a debilitating mental condition in two Ansonian warriors (essentially she reversed inborn mental retardation, and she was still a padawan.)

Weak compared to what? Compared to a Chu'la Field Ambulance, or a Goa'uld Sarcophagus, yes, their healing abilities are nothing great, but they're still able to work medical miricles.

In this case because Vader is using a Sith technique to heal himself. Dark Side techniques have more raw power but a correspondingly large 'bill'.
