Would Order 66 have auto-triggered if Palpatine was killed?

Palpatine doesn't strike me as the kind of person not to have some kind of contingency plan to fuck up the Jedi if he went down. Suppose Anakin decided to tip the other way. He lets Windu kills Palpatine. Order 66 was obviously a standing order, ready to be triggered at any time, and I think it would have been automatically triggered in the event of Palpatine's death.

What would happen in this scenario?

Would the shroud be lifted upon Palpy's death?

If so, I'd imagine a few more Jedi would get away (not many, just a few) - and the temple masacre might be stopped before it happened. Although it would be interesting if the clones go bat-shit insane, grap control of the ships they are serving on, and just start orbital bombardment.

Which thankyouverymuchLucus is how the Clone wars was origionaly protrayed in pre-scripts and EU, that being the Clones going Bat-shit insane and rampaging cross the galaxy.

Considering that it would look like the Jedi were staging a coup, I would imagine the clones would have turned on the Jedi no matter what. I'm positive Palpatine had some kind of contingency in place.

The difference in this scenario is that Mace Windu and Anakin Skywalker can return to the temple and fight the clones, instead of Anakin helping them while Windu lays in little Jedi bits on the surface of Coruscant. Of course, if the clones decided to fire on the temple from orbit, all the Jedi in the galaxy can't protect the temple, but they probably wouldn't do that right away, giving Windu and Skywalker time to evacuate the younglings and padawans.

Well, Palpatine did order Commander Jerjerrod to destroy Endor as a contingency in RotJ (novelization). It would fit perfectly with his character.

Well, all jedi that were leading clone trooper units, as seen in the film, would have been killed. The jedi temple is saved by Mace and Annakin, and so the jedi do not become extinct. The jedi may decide to take control of the senate and somehow this clonetrooper problem has to be dealt with since the jedi and by extention, the Republic can no longer count them as friends. I suppose it's even possible that the jedi may have to somehow negotiate an agreement to team up with the separatists and there battle droids to stop the clonetroopers. Many jedi will probably go in to hiding for a while and use "gorilla tactics" since I'd imagine that order 66 does not have any sort of expiration date so as long as clone troopers are alive they will be trying to kill jedi. This will lead to a great deal of instability within the Republic as there really is no one to lead it. It all depends on who can gain the support of the populace through the senate, and whether or not individual senators will view the jedi as traitors or patriots for killing there Chancellor. My guess would be that the senate attempts to elect a leader from amongst themselves, this leader will assume similar powers as Palpatine had, and they will keep using the clones to fight the separatists as they really have no other option unless a peace can be negotiated. As soon as the war is over or peace is achieved however, I see the Republic putting a plan in place to rid themselves of these clones, while the remaining jedi wait for it to be safe to return.

I doubt that gorilla tactics would be very useful for them, since gorillas have distinctly sub-human intelligence and their tactics are largely limited to roaring and charging at people.

Perhaps guerilla tactics would be better-suited to the Jedi Resistance.

Now orangutan tactics might be useful. The could use L space to sneak up on shielded positions, and maybe trick them in to calling them monkeys.
:D
I think it is almost an assured that Palpateen had a screw the Jedi dead mans switch in place. I don’t see why the clones would go crazy and after they kill the Jedi (or try to) I don’t see why they would not obey the orders of the senate.

I know that, at that moment, Order 66 overrid whatever it was that the clones were doing and they attacked and killed the Jedi, but isn't it at all possible that the newest commander in chief would just say, "Hey, you there. Stop that"?

Or would they give an eerie "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that"?

I'm guessing each clone could be programmed to automatically enact Order 66 upon learning of the Palpy's death.

LOL my bad. Well either way I'm sure the jedi's will have one hell of a resistance :P .

To me the Order 66 seemed more like "Your (Jedi) General(s) have betrayed the Republic, kill him/her/it" then "kill the Jedi", so for example Mace Windu could have use it against Bepa Billaba had he known about it (and had there been living clones close enough to her) with no harm to himself.

The clones will terminate the Jedi either way, as Order 66 is meant to be enacted in the case of the Jedi betraying the Republic. The Jedi assassinating the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic and commander in chief of the Grand Army would certainly constitute of high treason, and would be grounds for the execution of Order 66. I would imagine that should word get out of Palpatine's death, the clones would kill the Jedi. Also, we must not forget that Mas Amedda, Vice-Chancellor of the Senate, would become the de facto CiC in the case of Palpatine's death, and since he is already aware of Palpatine's true nature, I would imagine that he would order the clones to execute Order 66.

I think the words of Mace Windu and Anakin Skywalker, two of the most respected Jedi in the galaxy, plus holo-footage of evil hissing Lightning-wielding Palpatine (which Palpatine disposed of, I think, but having shrugged off his mortal coil will find it considerably more difficult to do), would be enough to sway the public in the Jedi's favor.

For real? He knew Palpatine was planning to destroy the Republic as the Lord of the Sith?

The only evidence of the fight comes from Palpatine's recording. The only other evidence would be the word of two Jedi who just assasinated the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic.

A recording that shows Palpatine as a hissing, Lightning flinging, Jedi-murdering baddie. You cannot honestly say that the holo would have potrayed the former Supereme Chancellor in a good light. For thousands of years, the Jedi have ruled, and no doubt imprinted on the people, Sith = Oh nos!!!1 Keep in mind Palpainte deliberately witheld this holo from the public, because being a Sith is bad news.

Even if it did include audio of Mace shooting the proverbial bird to the Senate by declaring them unfit to decide Palpatine's fate, do you really believe they would kill all the Jedi as punishment? Even the chilluns'?

No, the recording is audio only and is destroyed by a lightsaber (Palpatine's, but the public doesn't know that) right before the fight begins. Since Palpy's lightsaber was knocked out the window, there would be no evidence that he was a Sith Lord. And even then, the Republic constitution prevents discrimination based on philisophical beliefs. Given the supermajority Palpy held in the Senate, order 66 would be executed right away even if it didn't activate right after Palpy's death.

Oh, ok, forget all that business then.

They will no doubt find his backup lightsaber (he had another one to fight Yoda with). So we have that, plus the word of two of the most respected Jedi in the galaxy that he was a big badass Sith lord up to no good. In RotS Palpatine's story is the only one that the Senate hears, and in this scenario the Jedis' are the only ones they'll hear.

If it's activated directly upon his death, no one will even know why the clones are losing their minds and killing all the Jedi, which may cause for immediate termination of the order until shit gets settled down.

If it did go through the Senate do you think they would wipe out the entire Jedi Order through force based on the actions of five (Mace, Anakin, the three redshirts) Jedi? Without Palpatine's manipulation, it may be difficult for the Senate to task themselves with the murder of children.

The senate was happy when it found out the Jedi were going to be destroyed and an Empire emerge from the ashes of the Republic. They are ready to pass just about anything. If Palpatine's XO told them that Satan was becoming the Emperor then they would clap and be happy.

The Jedi wouldn't have any proof that the lightsaber is Palpatine's other than their word. And they still assasinated the Supreme Chancellor and the only recording of the confrontation has Palpatine accuse them of treason and scream for help before a lightsaber takes out the recording device.

I still don't know if anyone but Palpatine was in on the "Let's make the Empire and kill all the Jedi" dealie; do we know if anyone else was even aware of the existance of Order 66? If so, then the Senate probably would go ahead and do it. If not, why would the new Chancellor, even if he was one of Palpatine's cronies, have all of the Jedi killed?
The Jedi wouldn't have any proof that the lightsaber is Palpatine's other than their word.
And some fingerprints, plus whatever other ID shit the Star Wars universe has. Plus, it's not as if the three dead Jedi just killed themselves.
And they still assasinated the Supreme Chancellor and the only recording of the confrontation has Palpatine accuse them of treason and scream for help before a lightsaber takes out the recording device.
Did it still work after he wrecked it? Because that would be pretty damning evidence if it did.

Palpatine played the recording to the Senate as proof of the Jedi assasination attempt. It still worked. And Mas Amedda would become Chancellor, he knew all about Palpatine's true nature and was willing to serve Palpy. He would definitly have the Jedi killed. And he would get all those lovely powers the Senate had given to the beloved Supreme Chancellor Palpatine.

It's a pretty good bet. I'd venture to guess that the holograph viewed by the troops was a recording of Sidious giving the order. After all, does anyone really think he just sat around all day telling every clone unit across the galaxy to start killing Jedi? That'd take way too much time, and the the order appeared to have been delivered nearly simultaneously to each unit, with the Kashyyyk garrison getting it last.

If that's true, then it would've been trivial for him to set up an automated transmission that would send itself out in the event of his death.

I think even if Order 66 wasn't automatically put into effect by Palpatine's death, Palpatine's death would have indirectly caused Order 66 or something similer to come into effect.
