Lightsaber(s) vs Death Star Super Laser
Just a fun idea. Could a lightsaber technically stop or deflect the Death Star Super Laser? what about a whole bunch of lightsabers taped together?

If you scaled up a lightsaber blade until the width of the blade is greater than the planet then it may be possible.navy_seal55 wrote:Just a fun idea. Could a lightsaber technically stop or deflect the Death Star Super Laser? what about a whole bunch of lightsabers taped together?

Wouldn't you also need something to "hold" this giant lightsaber so it doesn't just get knocked aside by the beam?

why wider than a planet? the superlaser beam is not that wide, so why not just a bit wider than the beam itself?the .303 bookworm wrote:If you scaled up a lightsaber blade until the width of the blade is greater than the planet then it may be possible.navy_seal55 wrote:Just a fun idea. Isnt a blaster bolt slightly thicker than the blade? or is it just my poor eye-sight, can someone put up a pick for width comparison.
Also what would the recoil be from the hit, based on the kinetic knockback from deflection in the movies?

If scalled up correctly... Yes... But it would have to be able wishstand the kinetic impact, we know that when fokes with lightsabers start having to deflect crew serviced and above weapons they start getting knocked on their asses when doing it.
Also said blade should have to survive the energy bleed-off of the DS blast hitting it, meaning lots and lots of armored plating and shield generators.

Well, at least we know what Obi Wan was for; deflecting the Death Star's superlaser. That kooky rebellion. I'm suddenly getting images of superlasers bouncing off planets.
On a more useful note, it seems that it could, so long as it was big enough, and the wielder could take the literal heat that I suppose is coming off of it.

The trick with this is that the superlaser is an continuous beam weapon. We only ever see lightsabres deflecting blaster bolts.
That said, I don't see why lightsaber technology couldn't be applied in this regard. You would need a very, very big and strong somebody/something to hold the size of blade needed, though...

Meant in the movies. we don't know how much of the deflection is because of the Force and how much is because of the lightsaber blade. If a lot of it is because of the Force then it could probably be done (as with Force Lightning) but if it is just because of the strength of the blade than it would probably be tricky and difficult.

Throughout the EU, Jedi deflect blasters because of the way the blade interacts with the blaster bolt. The only the thing Force does is to guide the blade to the right spot.

Wouldn't even the upscaled power cell be instantly drained by having to reflect enough energy to send chunks of a planet flying outwards at half the speed of light? Since the Death Star's reactor was quite huge in and of itself.

Dont you mean overload.YT300000 wrote:Wouldn't even the upscaled power cell be instantly drained by having to reflect enough energy to send chunks of a planet flying outwards at half the speed of light? Since the Death Star's reactor was quite huge in and of itself.
And considering that a normal jedi saber can take ship level blasts without overloading while bleeding onto the user only a fraction of the kinetic impact i'd say... no.

If a lightsaber scaled up proportionally then it could possibly do it power-wise.Kurgan wrote:It would be like trying to stop an atomic blast with a toothpick.
But, what about a really really REALLY big strong toothpick? I don't know, ask a physicist.
If a saber could deflect a shot larger than it from a powerful ship-mounted cannon (AOTC) then if the saber was on the DS's scale why shouldnt it work?

Mace Windu blocks the beam weapon of a spider droid type thing (no idea how big it's really supposed to be) in the CW series (which is known for its exaggerations, but still).the .303 bookworm wrote:Dont you mean overload.YT300000 wrote:Wouldn't even the upscaled power cell be instantly drained by having to reflect enough energy to send chunks of a planet flying outwards at half the speed of light? Luke blocks the shots from an Imperial Speeder Biker in ROTJ.
When else (outside of video games) have we seen lightsabers deflect "ship level blasts" without overloading?
Even a tiny fraction of the Death Star kinetic blast would turn the Jedi into particles, I would think.

You'd have to make the lightsaber at least as thick as the Death Star laser beam, in itself not an easy task.
Also, as we've seen, it takes a significant amount of energy from the bearer to deflect even the Sith Lightning emitted by Sidious; i dont think any Jedi would have the energy to block the DS beam

If lightsaber technology could be scaled beyond the personal level to stop artillery bolts, someone would have made shields based around it.

You would need a wielder large enough to hold and manipulate it as well, not a common task considering the lack of Eva's in SWDurandal wrote:If lightsaber technology could be scaled beyond the personal level to stop artillery bolts, someone would have made shields based around it.

as they have, The protecting the Rimsoo in the MedStar dualogy was based in similar technology as a Lightsaber (it was so close in fact, that the shield could affect lightsabers)Durandal wrote:If lightsaber technology could be scaled beyond the personal level to stop artillery bolts, someone would have made shields based around it.
