I have some money to spare on some Star wars material (i.e Novels and comics.) I have been always fascinated by the Eras leading up to TPM, such as the Great Hyperspace war, Xim the Despot's reign, and the original sith. Are there any good material worth reading that are set in the years and millenia before TPM?
Note: I've already read Rogue Planet.

Well, some people seem to like the storyline in Knights of the Old Republic, although for the life of me I can't figure out why.

What's wrong with the story in KOTOR? From what I've heard it's supposed to be pretty good. Except for some of the events in the evil line.

The KOTOR storyline is in my opinion is one of the better ones in the EU (the official continuity, light side version in any event.) It incorporates all of the best elements of the movies, with creative variations and a very good ESB-style revelation. The character development is very good as well. KOTOR ll's plot is pretty good as well, although not up to the original IMO.
By the way, isnt Rogue Planet post TPM?

Was it? It's been 2 years since I read Rogue planet, I might have forgotten.

I thought it featured the Anakin/Obi-wan team. I might be wrong though.

Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter is a very good read. Although its only set a few weeks or days before TPM so it may not be exactly what you meant.

Quality of the above as iffy. Not having read the novels, I can't comment on them, although all of them are generally talked about positively.

Yes, even if you're not that into games I'd very strongly recommend KOTOR, and the Light Side part of KOTOR 2. I can't say about the Dark Side, since I only just got through the game on Light.
