I wasn´t sure whether to put this in the "Canon sticky thread" or not, but since some people might find it enlightening and useful, here is GL´s words about the EU (first paragraph, line 5 and 6):

Once again, it is not a "parallell universe" or "paid fan fiction" and therefore irrelevant. Some people are just abit slow to get this.

I'm shocked, not. As far as George Lucas is concerned, "spin-off" novels occupy the world of Star Wars, and are only "spin-offs" because he's not personally 'doing' it.

I wonder how You know who will take this?
I'll bet he will spin doctor it like usuall.
On a side note this now means that We can now point out the The Corporate Sector Authority or the Hapan Consortium can take out the federation and these are only minor Star Wars Powers.
Good to have it nailed down at last.

For those who can't wait for that slow-ass imageshack picture, here's the relevant quote from the scan:
"It's not about Darth Vader or the saga. It just takes place in that world. It's like the spin-off novels. I'm not doing it, other people are doing it." - George Lucas, interviewed in Empire Magazine, summer 2005.

Because "Joey" took place in a completely different universe from "Friends."

*Rimshot*
Considering all the Star Trek series TNG-ENT have been described as spin-offs, if someone were stupid enough to twist the quote in that fashion, it would be damned easy to turn it around on them.
