Darth Vader's injuries and Imperial health care

Hi, everybody...my first post.

Vader has numerous body parts replaced due to his duel with Obi-Wan when he fell into a pit of molten lava/slag/whatever, and he required replacement limbs and numerous other internals. Basically, Vader's suit is a walking iron lung for his burned respitory system.

I would assume that the Empire has medical technology far in advance of our own, and keeps detailed files on all Imperial subjects, including DNA and tissue types.

We, today, have the ability to transplant organs...including lungs.

Why didn't the Empire's #2 man search the imperial medical databases for a matching donor, and having the poor schmoe bumped off for his healthy innards?

While they could've done repairs to him physically perhaps Palpatine had a far more devious reason to keep him hindered.

I mean we won't know the level of his injuries until Ep3 so let's not wonder why Palp didn't patch him up so quickly.

Hey, ES. My first day, too. :D

Maybe because he wanted the impersonal and scary effects from wearing the Darth Vader suit? It was custom-designed by him, after all.

I'm thinking that there was too much damage to fully repair with transplants. His respitory system is probably completely shot. You'd probably have to replace damn near all of it. The med tech is good, but I don't think it is good enough to repair damn near everything.

It's symbolic. He fell to the dark side and loses his good looks in the process only to regain a more human form after his redemption.

No I don't find Hayden attractive, but a lot of female fans I know do.

Ok lets do a recheck of Injurys that Anakin Suffered

Head? Check, Hair Burned off, 2nd Degree Burns
Torso? ... Mostly Check, 3 Degree Burns
Arms? 1/2 a Check, One 1st and 2nd Degree Burned Arm, other arm MIA
Legs? Nope, Burned off

Bsaicly from the oooh Bell-button down, Anakin lost + that one arm, he lost roughly a quater of his torso and STILL lived says somthing about Imperal Medical Tecnology

Perhaps, just perhaps if they replaced his parts, it would lower his Miticlorin sp? count.

Episode III should answer most of those questions, and I'm content to wait.

Although it should be noted the one fact that a lot of people dance around is that if they have advanced cloning technology why not simply clone the lost legs and the arm? Cybernetics are so passe. Its sort of an odd brain bug in Wars that you can clone stormtroopers whole by the division and not clone limbs and such.

Maybe there's a cultural issue with cloned replacement parts? It wouldn't surprise me, look at the stink people are kicking up about cloning here on Earth.

Because cloning all those replacements takes time. Time Vader didn't have. Ditto for finding an exceptable donor.

Didn't Vader also have a big gouge like scar on the top of his skull? Almost like he took a partial light saber hit to the head?

For a list, description, and analysis of the injuries and treatment of Darth Vader.

Included are two really cool, really clear x-ray images of Vader's head and upper body, which were used in ROTJ as part of the visual effects.

And GAT they couldn't graft them on later??? As for the donor....his OWN cells no?

Perhaps Vader wanted to keep the implants. Or they were permanent.

And donor I meant organ transplant.

Perhaps all the mechanical parts were to intimidate foes. Darth Vader wouldn't be the same if he looked like an overweight, balding Hayden Chritensen.

Perhaps Vader did not want cloned body parts because he felt his Force powers could compensate for his body loss.
In Vader's case, it might have been a personal challenge.

These all sound contrived ways to explain away a very simple procedure. You have the technological base to clone millions of clone troopers and train them in half the time it would normally take to grow from scratch and you can't clone a guy's legs and arm??

How would cloned tissue be any different in regard to Force use...Vader's MECHANICAL UNLIVING parts did not seem to affect his force usage abilities at all.

All I'm trying to say that it is a gaping flaw in the story that can be traced back to GL's idea of a machine man but not realizing the full extent of cloning technology and its possibilities. Its a shame that this was never addressed.

Also any ban against cloning must come into existenece AFTER the clone war or the clone army would have been destroyed as an abomination YET Anakin has a mechanical arm in AOTC....

Perhaps the implants and replacement parts were better than the original ever had been?

Perhaps it was psychological on his, or Palpatines part... creating a permanent, irreducable seperation between Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader...

After the clone wars there was supposedly a clampdown on all cloning tech. Similar to the backlash against AI's in Dune. People didn't want cloning tech around at all and so Vader couldn't get it done legally.

And Palpatine probably would have had him killed if he had tried.

I think it's more likely that during the Wars, all of the cloning facilities were destroyed, and the... uh... cloning guys from AOTC... were either all killed or were so massively attacked that they lost all of their facilities and all of their research.

In short, I bet it's lost tech. And while they might eventually get it back, it won't happen any time soon because of the mentioned prejudices against cloning technology.

That basically what I was thinking. The truly impressive cloning tech went down along with the clonesmasters. And the rest is banned and feared.

With the most impressive cloners gone, they probably couldn'tm find anyone to rebuild Vader even if the Emperor would have allowed it.

GAPING hole in the current theory about lost tech....the stormtroopers we see throughout the OT. I don't care what anyone says GL says they are CLONES and someone is growing them. And if SW is so advanced how can you say cloning is lost tech? Hell we're starting cloning NOW.

Not a satisfying answer. If Vader wanted cloned limbs I'm sure he can have them, the question is why not, why the prevalence of cybernetics as opposed to all natural limbs?

I think that the answer lies with the question. What's the point of replacing limbs with organic limbs? Vader's limbs displayed no movement problems, whatsoever. They were strong without requiring significant or apparent exercise on his part. They were dextrous. Why would he want to replace them with something that provided only as much functionality as he already had, and may have even been more dangerous. To have surgery to replace them with organic limbs would have taken at least three days, and it is likely that he decided they weren't worth the investment in time. The question is, "Why would he keep his cybernetics if he had access to organic limbs, if he wanted them?" The answer is simply that he did not want them. Organic limbs would have been weaker and much more easily damaged.
