ARC-170 and the X-wing
After seeing the ARC-170 in combat, I wonder just how good it would have been if it were use at Yavin, Hoth, Endor, and any where else for that matter. For example an ARC-170 squad being used to knock out the Deathstar's Defenses for the smaller X-wings can concentrate on Fighters and Y-wings on the Trench. Luke still gets the shot in though. We can never take that from him.
(Assume the ARC-170 has been upgraded over the years with better systems over the years.)

How kickarse would Luke Skywalker be in an ARC-170, assuming he's refined his telekinesis?Luke still gets the shot in though. We can never take that from him.
And yes, the ARC-170 would have kicked arse at the Battle of Yavin, and provided excellent cover fire for the X-Wings... It's a pity it wasn't there.
I don't know if the ARC-170 would fit in the trench very well. It was crowded for the fighters that did. But if it can then luke would have to be in the Elevated copilot seat to shoot the the torps unless he told the Copilot when to fire.Dakarne wrote:How kickarse would Luke Skywalker be in an ARC-170, assuming he's refined his telekinesis?Luke still gets the shot in though. I easily see an ARC-170 fitting... since all of the Cockpit space is compounded by making it taller rather than widerI don't know if the ARC-170 would fit in the trench very well. I don't see how ARC-170's could have been better than Y-Wings. They could probably take a bit more damage, but in a trench run with limited room and laser cannons spewing out hundreds of shots.. massacre. They're fairly big too, so chances are a few more would be shot down by turbolasers. A-Wings would have been better in my opinion, slightly modded with PTs if need be.

Now that you mentioned it, the protothype A-Wing was at Yavin. Though its status is unknown. But, however, my contention is that it be used in suppressing the Turbolaser fire while the Y-wing go for the trench and the X-wings hold off the fighter. Add in improved Finger Four tactics rather than the triads every one was using and far more rebels would have survived the battle.nightmare wrote:I don't see how ARC-170's could have been better than Y-Wings. Now at Hoth the ARC-170 would have been able to take on that Disabled Star Destroyer and trash it up pretty badly, and possibly if they hit the Bridge, cause it to plunge into Hoth and be destroyed.

Obviously, they didn't have A-Wings or they would have used them. The prototype A-Wing would be the R-22 Spearhead, but they probably didn't want to send pilots out on such a risky mission when they had more dependable crraft to draw upon. Spearheads might have been good though, they were basically A-Wings with less weaponry. But they would have had to be modded for the mission, so there was probably no time for it either, assuming they could put a squadron together.
So basically.. I think they did the best of what they had.

"There's no such thing as luck in my experience." Paraphrased But I agree with you. ARC-170s at Hoth... could probably have played merry devil with at least one disabled ISD. The Tyrant and not the Avenger as some sources claim, IIRC. It didn't even seem to have any weapons left online. But the objective for the rebels there was to get the hell out ASAP, not go on assault runs. I mean, the Empire had to have TIE fighters somewhere, perhaps in between the Star Destroyers to complete the blockade. They could have posed a problem for running any assaults on disabled ISD.Dakarne wrote:That was one of the luckiest events in film history, right behind the destruction of it's sequel. So basically.. Don't forget that the ARC-170s have rear cannons that would ward off all but the most single minded TIE Pilots in addition to powerful sheilds. Plus the X-wings are tasked with escort so that frees the hypothetical ARC-170 squad to go after the Tyrant. This would have made the hole bigger as well.nightmare wrote:"There's no such thing as luck in my experience." Paraphrased ;) But I agree with you. having a turret didn't help the YT-2000 escaping Hoth against the TIEs that attacked her.rommel17 wrote:Don't forget that the ARC-170s have rear cannons that would ward off all but the most single minded TIE Pilots in addition to powerful sheilds. I may be an idiot, but I'm a tolerated idiot

Thats because the Falcon's Hyperdrive was down and they couldn't escape.Lord Revan wrote:having a turret didn't help the YT-2000 escaping Hoth against the TIEs that attacked her.rommel17 wrote:Don't forget that the ARC-170s have rear cannons that would ward off all but the most single minded TIE Pilots in addition to powerful sheilds. That was disapointing ..Should we show this Federation how to build a ship so we may have worthy foes? Typhonis 1

Thank You, now back to use of the ARC-170. Any more ideals where this excellent fighter could have had an impact in the expand universe or trilogy. Think hard and put out some ideals.Dakarne wrote:'twas escaping hoth, 'twas attacked by fighters, and the turrets, they did not help. [/poor poetry]My mistake. Thats vague. Maybe in hunter-killer packs of 36.Dakarne wrote:Support craft for Larger Vessels...
And of course, giving the Yuuzhan Vong one for Chewbacca.
What about a squad against the Ssi Ruvi. Operating in 3 groups of 4, they could have swept the Ssi Ruvi Picket Ships out of action, while leaving the B-wings free for the cruisers. Would have ended the battle quicker.

Why wonder why? The answer is simple: obviously, someone somewhere decided that he or she needed Baby Jesus up the ass.
