Ranks in the Old Republic

Post by The Original Nex »

Alright, in the Old Republic the Jedi "Generals" commanded Legions, they were most likely either Generals or Generals of the Army (maybe even High Generals, a rank that is only used in SW). Their Clone proxies, the "Commanders" present more of a problem. They are the second in command of the legion after their non-clone counterparts. Is their rank equvilant to that of a Lieutenant General or a Major General, or something else?

Anyone with more military knowledge than me care to enlighten?

I'd say that Clone Commanders are colonels in terms of rank (aka not general officers themselves).

EDIT:though my knowllage on army chain of command is not good as I was in the (finnish) Navy.

In the Canadian Army a Brigade is commanded by a Brigadier General, but he is also addressed as "Commander" as an honorific. Something similar may be at work here. A Clone Commander maybe a General but called a Commander as a title.

I agree with Kendall, Commander in this case is probably an honorific.
I think the ranks may actually vary. We have two Clone Commanders leading Corps' (Bly of the 327th Star Corps, and Gree of the 41st Elite Corps), one a Battalion (Cody the 212th Attack Battalion), two of units of undesignated size (Bacara of the Galactic Marines, and Thire of the Coruscant Shock Troopers), and Neyo "served under Oppo Rancisis' multi-battalion taskforce", insinuating he maybe commanded a Battalion too, or a Regiment.

So that creates an observed lower limit of Major and upper limit of Major General (going by Curtis Saxton's ranking system), with Bacara and Thire possibly even being of even higher rank.

Is there a named Commander of the 501st Legion? I couldn't find one on the official website. If there is one, he would be a High Colonel.

here in the states Commanders are in the navy and coast guard
hmmm.. I'm sure this has been posted somewhere else but...

Navy Officers: Ensign, LT junior grade, LT, Lt Cmdr, Cmdr, Captain, Rear Admiral lower, Rear Ad upper, Vice Ad, Admiral, Fleet Admiral.

Marines: 2nd LT, 1st LT, Captain, Major, Lt Colonel, Colonel, Brig General, Maj Gen, Lt Gen, General. No corresponding rank for fleet Ad.

The airforce and army are similar to the marines and the coasties are titled like the navy. The Army use to have a rank equal to Fleet (5 star) called General of the Army, but they haven't had one since the early to mid 50s I believe. Pay grade titles are uniform throughout the US armed forces. E1-E9, W1-W5 and O1-O10.

As far as the clone ranks, I think that the clone Commaders would be equivalent to Captains and Colonels and the Jedi would be the lowest Generals.
