Why did Yoda send Obi after Anakin?

More to the point why didn't Yoda and Obi-Wan team up against Palpatine? Anakin may be extremly powerful with potential to become far more powerful than Palpatine but at that point Palpatine was the main threat.
For all his power Vader was still just a pawn in Palpatines game and couldn't really take control of the galaxy at that point.

I think it's because Yoda knew palp was WAY too powerful for obi-wan, hell, he could barely beat him. once palps had yoda busy with one thing or another, it would be a very simple matter for him to cut down obi-wan, and then turn his full attention to yoda, who he laid the smack down on anyway. Plus, if palps got obi-wan in a position where it was "Yoda, drop the lightsaber or obi-wan gets it!" then, they would both be killed, surely, and no one would be around to watch after the twins. it was simply safer to send obi-wan after anakin, since A) anakin was not as powerful as palpatine, and B) Think about it, obi-wan trained anakin since he was a child. He knows anakins style, his moves, his weaknesses. Better to have Obi kill the apprentice. then, there would be no successor to palpatine. After all, all the Jedi were dead, and training a new apprentice would be EXTREMELY difficult with yoda and obi-wan breathing down palps neck every time he turned around.
The plan was for obi-wan to kill anakin, then, they would both go after palpatine, I think. Which, at that point would be exceedingly easy. Yoda and obi-wan would have the advantage of picking the time, place, and method with which they would strike palpatine. Yoda's fight with palps, I think was simply a diversion to give obi-wan time to kill Anakin without the emporer rushing off to help him.

I don't think Yoda would sacrifice the trillions in the galaxy for the sake of Obi-Wan. Not to mention he was perfectly willing to sacrifice Leia and Han just so that Luke(his weapon against Palpatine) doesn't come in danger.

Actually it would be much better to kill the master. Then the apprentice won't have anyone to learn from.

Breathing down Palpatines neck? Palpatine was guarded by billions of Clonetroopers and fleets of starships.

Yoda's fight with Palpatine was "now or never" situation. He had the element of surprise since Palpatine didn't know he survived. After that Palpatine would surround himself with the army and would become untouchable which is exactly what happened. Obi-Wan and Yoda won't be picking neither time nor place.
Yoda had only one chance to bring down Palpatine and should make sure that he had every advantage possible. That included bringing Obi-Wan Kenobi. Taking down powerful but politicaly uninfluential Vader was clearly a distant secondary priority.

That's not the point. Even if Yoda was willing to sacrifice Obi-wan for the greater good (which he likely would, and Obi himself would as well) Palpatine would still be able to use his presence to his advantage, and if nothing else, Obi-Wan would get in the way or need to be partially protected, which would overall weaken Yoda and probably get Obi killed.

And yet Yoda was able to inflitrate the Senate building itself, probably one of the most secure structures in the entire galaxy. Jedi may not be able to take on whole armies, but if trained correctly, they make devestating infiltrators, sabotures, and assassins (look at Darth Maul and Mara Jade.)

Obi-Wan defeated Anakin who defeated Dooku who fought an even fight with Yoda. His obvious skills aside it never hurts to have backup and even if Obi-Wan was much less powerful he could still distract Palpatine and improve Yoda's odds.

Yes beacause Palpatine assumed Yoda was dead and he hasn't completed turning Coruscant into unbreakable fortress. Like I said this was Yoda's ONLY chance and he blew it.

I shall bring you all back to AOTC.
"Too sure of ourselves we have become. Even the older, more wiser ones."
Yoda was overconfident. After the Jedi Order was completely ravaged, he wanted to destroy the Sith in one fell swoop. He probably assumed that since he was the de facto ruler of the Jedi Order for such a long time, that he'd be able to handle Palpatine by himself. Bringing Obi-Wan along meant leaving Vader alone for now and not ending it immediately.

I think it has more to do with the fact that if Obi Wan and Yoda go together, and if something happens and they both die, there's nobody left. If they each go separately all of their eggs aren't in the same basket.

Just like splitting the Twins up and sending them to completely different house holds.

These two situations are not analogous. Splitting the twins up
improved the odds that at least one of them would survive however splitting up Yoda and Obi-Wan
decreased Yoda's chances against Palpatine (the primary target) while still endangering Obi-Wan.

Two things. One, Yoda was defeating Dooku pretty soundly before he collapsed the pillar and was able to escape. Two, why do you assume that everyone's levels of skill stayed the same over the course of the war? Anakin's own skill increased signifcantly, that is known, but whose to say Dooku didn't become weaker over time, or that Yoda didn't become stronger now that he was actually fighting again? Also, the only real reason Obi was able to defeat Anakin is because he knew him so well, and could exploit his weaknesses.

Perhaps. Nevertheless, having Yoda and Obi-Wan around actively trying to undermine Palpatine still would have been a significant problem. Imagine a Rebel Alliance galvinized by the leadership of two of the most powerful members of the Jedi Order.

I'm not saying that having Obi-Wan by his side would grant Yoda a victory. In fact it could be argued that if Palpatine was facing two Jedi instead of one he would not behave as arrogantly as he did in his fight with Yoda and would likely still win. However that possibility does not justify Yoda's decision to go in alone.

While their help would ceartainly be useful that would hardly be enough to keep Palpatine from training another apprentice as Chardok suggested.

I agree they aren't analogus. But Obi Wan and Yoda splitting up prevented them both being eliminated at the same time in the same place. If Obi Wan and Yoda ended up in some kind of situation where all it took was on exploding building, or one carefully placed thermal detonator to kill them both, then it's bye bye Jedi for good.

You might be right. Still, he did go alone, perhaps because he was too arrogant, or perhaps because he saw that it was more likely for Obi to survive a duel with Anakin than with Palpatine, even if his death ensure Yoda's victory. I would imagine Yoda didn't want to see another Jedi, especially not because of him.

That is true. It should be noted though that Palpatine's most likely pool of new prospects for training would most likely come from either one of the younger padawans who somehow escaped the Purge, or the failed Jedi being kept at the Agri. Corps. If Yoda and Obi-Wan had been left unchecked, they might have been able to get those prospects to saftey and hamper Palpatine's efforts.

"True," Yoda said. "But both of us apart, a chance we might create"
So they agreed even together they didn't have a chance. I'm not sure. I understand the last line though.

The failed jedi at the Agri corps would not be suitable for Palpatine, they were failed because they were too weak or did not have enough control. Palpatine has demonstrated that he wants the most powerful apprentices possible. And why would his pool of prospects be limited to the younger padawans and agri corps? He seemed to have plenty or Force adepts working for him aside from Vader anyway.

Some of those at the Agri. Corps are too weak, although many other simply lack the control needed to be a Jedi, perhaps due to being trained too late. The Sith, or at least some of them, value and thrive off of lack of control of one's emotions. Look at Darth Maul, or Anakin. As for the padawans, I noted them because they would be easier to convert than a full fledged knight or Master, although doing that would not be impossible (Dooku.)
As for his other adepts at that point, I was under the impression that most were either dead, or had fled the CIS.

Yoda was pretty clear in the RoTS novelization that he didn't send Obi-Wan after Palpatine because he believed that Obi-Wan was no match for Palpatine, especially alone. I think these were his actual words:
"Strong enough to defeat Lord Sidious, you will never be. Die you will, and painfully."

I disagree with the "lack of control". Darth Maul was a very disciplined killer, he didn't just lose control and become some kind of berserker with his fighting. According to the RoTS novelization Anakin had to learn to direct and control hsi anger and fear in order to overcome Dooku. Also, losing control of his emotions against got Skywalker nearly killed. Sith might embrace hate, and anger, and pain, but a degree of control is required.

I should have clarified, I was referring to agents such as Mara Jade. Who, although overglorified in my honest opinion, made an excellent agent.

Let me clarify, from a Jedi perspective "Lack of Control" can mean being to susecptiable to anger, hatred, etc. things that the Sith use to increase thier own power and are essential to the path they choose. Certainly, they do require control of their actions, but only focus for their combat skills and the furthering of thier goals, not the repression of emotions, as a Jedi would do.

Mara Jade's origins are unknown, although I think its probable that Palpatine had not found her yet (she is at most two year older than Luke, although she may be younger than him.)

I think that It was because anakin will be too powerful if he survived....even without Palpatine as the sith have required the holocrons, he will still be a powerful sith...

I think yoda thought he could take palpatine, and sent obi wan not to kill anakin, but to see if he could bring him to his senses. I think he knew that obi wan had some of the most influence on anikin. I also think he was old, and had not had a good battle in a while, and wanted to test his strength.

I have to disagree with you. The dialogue indicates that Yoda believed Anakin/Vader was unredeemable:
YODA: Destroy the Sith, we must.
OBI-WAN: Send me to kill the Emperor. I will not kill Anakin.
YODA: To fight this Lord Sidious, strong enough, you are not.
OBI-WAN: He is like my brother ... I cannot do it.
YODA: Twisted by the dark side, young Skywalker has become. The boy you trained, gone he is . . . Consumed by Darth Vader.

not to nitpick, i believe this board talked about this, you should check the directory thing
we came to the conclusion was that Anakin may have sayed, oh my force what have i done and then go with obiwan
and also we came to believe that Sidious would have beaten the you know what out of obiwan and there would go the whole Jedi will live on thing
