New Death Star Novel in the Works

Post by Mange »

The writers of the Medstar Duology, Steve Perry and Michael Reaves, have been chosen to write a novel that will take place between Episode III and IV that will tell the story about the Death Star (slated for release in the fall of 2007):

This is going to be interesting...

*fingers crossed*

Oh, what stupidity could the LFL team come up with next?

Still, the guys that wrote MedStar at least seem to have brainstems, so they might be our best shot...

I wonder if it's going to be an actual novel or a collection of short stories like the 'Tales of' series.

You know, I really wouldn't mind too much if they ignore the Maw installation completely, but they'd better have it built around Despayre with Bevel Lemelisk as chief engineer.

Who wants to bet that this novel will "confirm" that the DS at the end of ROTS is the DS1? This could be the 5-mile fallacy all over again. Years from now, Saxton and everyone on this board will still be fighting that idea while guys like Pablo or Thrawn McEwok (Arkady Hodge) insult and dismiss visuals in favor of their holy EU text.

Kidding. 8) Seriously, I hope this brings an end once and for; I'm sick of the Death Star being the SW equivalent of Power Girl.

Hell, if that´s the final answer, I´ll only rationalize it with the design being changed and re-adjusted and that the short time spent on the DS II only showed the UNLIMITED POWER of the bureacracy before ANH. ;)

Though it is not my wish, I think betting this will happen is the safer bet... Fucking LFL! Don't they ever learn! Fuck them! Fuck them!

What's worse is that if they do this, they'd invalidate their own work. Most of the work would be unusable, and that's no good for anyone.

Come on, MedStar writers, keep your brainstems!!!! Please!!!!

At one point, PG's origin has been that of another Kryptonian survivor, an Atlantean princess from the past thrown into the future, or a Legion member sent into the past. The truth appears to be tied to Infinite Crisis.

Because it would mess up the industrial capacities of the empire based on the believed per year capacity for star destroyers or building the DS2 in about 3 years.
Basically it would reduce the Empires industrial capacity my a near magnitude.

Of course, it's the writers' (stupid and inconsistant) intent that it be the Death Star (or at least, all the art books I saw talk about it as the Death Star. So yes, I'd bet on endorsement of the RotS deat sphere being the Death Star.

Oh get over it.

My main concen is what happens to all the older EU bits which were around to explain the first Death Star program. I would REALLY like to see a reconciling these older sources with the ROTS existence of either 'The Great Weapon' or the First Death Star. Stuff like the Maw, Tarkin and Ackbar, Lemensk and so on, I really want to see it all carefuly brought in.

I have faith that they can do it. Because I am getting sick of the PT just blasting past long established 'EU facts' without any attempt at bringing it all together.

I have high hopes.

The DS2 and the vast number of Star Destroyers and bigger ships go against any "measurement" made by the DS1 construction time alone. There has to be some issues involved other than "they couldn´t do it quicker".

I had this theory that while they were building the DS (if it really is the thing in ROTS), they only focused on the living areas and storage facilities while, say, the DS Prototype was made to test the superlaser-concept (which would then be added/adjusted to the station as it was being built).
Throw in a few malfunctions/explosions along the way, and you can have more DS Protoypes being built = More time wasted. =P

If they insist on that spherical ... thing in ROTS being the Death Star I, I have low hopes of them being able to smooth over the old story with the new. 3 years and 20 years is just too different a basic story.

Professionally speaking, unless Lucas got a bribe from desperate Trekkies/minimalists :D , no one gains any advantage from his stupid idea (there are some rumors this shit came from His Highness).

1) Does it improve the plot? No, not in any way I can see.
2) Does it improve literary consistency? Nope, it reduces it - anytime you change something like this you would reduce this kind of consistency, so you only do it if it improves the plot or the logic greatly.
3) Does it improve logical consistency - no, it degrades it (Death Star I that had to go for multiple redesigns for over 20 years but DSII in three years absolute max? Uh-huh...)

The best way to handle it is for the MedStar authors to follow WEG just this once and stick up their middle fingers in Lucas' face. If they stop the final idiocy, the bridging between the old and the new is ridiculously easy. If not it'd be ridiculously and un-necessarily hard. Come on, MedStar authors, WEG-like balls! Use your judgment!

Anything less than a beautiful fuse will cause yet another continuity dispute. Worst case is that the book will run against the film and get itself excised. If that happens, the already crappy authority of the EU would be further degraded - and that's no advantage to anyone.

There´s that story with the Tonnika sisters and it has the DS2 superlaser being transported/prepared around the time of ANH, so that would be 3 years.

This would be incredibly easy to reconcile. If the book actually has the ROTS simply be the Geonosian "Great Weapon" then they could simply say that it's design was flawed, so they disassmebled it, took the plans to the Maw, and redesigned it, including a better superlaser system or something. I have fairly high hopes that something similar to this will occur in the book.

Wasn't another problem with the thing at the end of ROTS that the super laser was located on the equator while its on the top hemisphere on the DS1? Anyone have a screen cap?

The words "Shut....up....Kaz...." come to mind here.

Would I be highly ammused if the uber Death Star construction times were modified in canon? Yes, mostly because of people like you who jerk off to them if SDR is any indication

Its irrelevent at any rate because the DS2 is a solid figure that can't really be altered and as its just a LITTLE bigger then the DS1, its more useful.

Jesus Kaz, get over it. The book isn't even out yet and already your either foaming at the mouth or crying like a schoolboy because your favorite toy has been broken. Can we WAIT for it to come out for you to start screaming about the fact that it doesn't inflate the Galactic Empire enough for your tastes?

This book has a good chance to reconcile everything. The DS1, the Great Weapon, the Maw and so on. So I am very much looking forward to it. If you could take your hand off your dick for a second, perhaps you could see this as well.

Personally i think all this boo-hooing about "No that's not the Death Star the DS1 wa sbuilt in...like...TWO SECONDS!!1!" is silly.

Shit i'm a Warsie and i think it's retarded.

Lets say it was built over twenty years, ok. Number one...it still produced VASTLY more energy than a star. Number two...why would you give a fuck? Number three...George Lucas knows more about the SW universe than anyone here, he MADE the fucker, mmkay. 'EU Facts' can suck a railspike, GL knows when and how and in what manner the machine he created was built and if he authorizes this novel and makes it cannon, good for him, godspeed.

This jerking off to the DS build-times is and has always been to me silly. For Christ's sakes they have destroyers that can reduce a planet to molten slag, isnt that enough to satisfy you? Or how about this, the Galaxy Gun, better range and roughly equal power to the DS1 and 2, wank that for a while lord knows i have.
