Was something going on between Adm Daala and Cmdr Kratas?

The basis for my suspicion comes from Darksaber as Kratas dies in Teradoc's attack.

1. When Kratas knows he's about to die his last words are "Admiral, I-" (63, hardback edition)

2. The book says that the image of his death was "an agonizing memory for Admiral Daala." (page 64)

3. Later it write that she was "still stunned at the loss of Kratas" (65).

Do you think the two of them had some kind of relationship?

Were his last words going to be "Admiral, I love you."?

Quote 2 makes it blindingly obvious.

one thing you have to know is that DarkSaber is suppose to be a Star Trek book that has the Star Wars name on it. damn those extradimensional creatures who eat Jedi and their friends

I never took it as such, when Kratas died. To me, it had always been a close but professional relationship. He had been her second in command for 15+years, her confidante, and trusted friend even. In all of the previous books, it has never hinted at anythig of a close, sexual relationship of some sort between the two. In the first book of the Jedi Academy Trilogy, it states that Daala could have had any of the men (paraphrasing) on board her ship but she chose to remain faithful to Tarkin.

The only other relationship that is explicit is in that god awful book (can't remember the name and don't really want to know) where she, now retired and living on some isolated planet with a small group of civilians, makes a breif appearce with some past lover.

*cringe*.......god was that a bad book........I couldn't even read 1/10 of it.

I think you're reading too much into it.
1. When Kratas knows he's about to die his last words are "Admiral, I-" (63, hardback edition)
"Admiral, I apologize for my failure."

"Admiral, I wish you luck."

"Admiral, I am abandoning ship."

"Admiral, I think we're outmatched."

Really, it could've been bloody anything. Two words really isn't enough to go on.
2. The book says that the image of his death was "an agonizing memory for Admiral Daala." (page 64)

3. Later it write that she was "still stunned at the loss of Kratas" (65).

If you'd lost your XO of, what, 20 years? you probably wouldn't get over it in a day either.

Not to say that such a relationship wasn't possible, but there's not enough to show for it.

I thought the most realistic quote, had he time to finish, would have been "Admiral, I'm sorry."

This bring an intresting question just how old is/was Admiral Daala as she's always descripted as a redhead, but it's never even hinted that her hair is losing it's color.

I'd say that theres nothing going on between Daala and Kratas beyond a professional working relasionship, as has already been stated.

I'd put Daala at 40+, she was at the Cardian academy but didn't get posted for years until Tarking came along and took her away from there, she was out of touch for 10 years, with the stint in the Maw pushing 15+ years (not sure how long). Concerning the grey hair, it would seem that no woman in SW goes grey until they head towards their 50's, both Leia and Mara are never described as going grey, not even grey streaks IIRC.

It could be added that scientists in real life are developing gene therapy techniques that would permanently "dye" someone's hair: +http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/Future ... 527&page=1

With SW tech, I'm sure such techniques would be commonly available.

It's been a long time since I read the books with Daala in them (Darksaber and Planet of Twilight, aside from the KJA Jedi trilogy *shudders*), but if I remember correctly, in Planet of Twilight Daala states that she never took on a lover after Tarkin. According to her, he was all she ever needed.

Also, at the end of Planet of Twilight, her hair is described as having lost it's luster and shine. It's described as fading to a very dull red by Princess Leia when she meets with her after her and Luke's rescue. Right after this, the coder for the freighter project (I can't remember his name) comes in and see Daala. Apparently, they were lovers when they were younger, before she had joined the Imperial Navy. They leave after their kiss and the others let them go.

If anyone else has something that corrects this, please do so. It's been a LONG time since I read Darksaber or PoT, and while I didn't think PoT was bad, there is no way I'm going to read Darsaber anytime soon.

sure but she'd need to dye her skin too (that's why it sometimes so obvivous that someone dyed their hair it doesn't match their skin.)

More then likely it was something like
"Admiral I..."

' want to say it's been an honor serving with you'
" believe in you"
" am sorry"

If #2 was "I love you," I don't think it'd be prefaced with "Admiral."

In I, Jedi Corran Horn used some special enzyme and shampoo for a blond dye job that would last IIRC several months. The dye it sould be noted effected all the bodies hair.

That would depend on how the Commander thought of his Admiral, wouldn't it? The same military tradition that kept him from saying anything for 20 years would probably also require he use the correct title when professing his love.

I really don't want to try remember Darksaber too clearly but IIRC, Commander Kratas transmited his last words on a (least partly) open channel ,so that anyone could hear what he said and he knew it.

Now military tradition is that you adress a superior officer (in rank, not skill) as Sir, Ma'am (or the equilvant of these) or by his/her Rank, especially in front of the lower rank. To do otherwise is direspect.

For Example I have friend whom I met while we both were in service and during that time I'd use his real last name in private, but use "herra Kokelas" while on duty (the finish equilevant for sir is "herra" and the rank of said person), because he was a NCO and I was a Private.

I don't any reason why the Imperial Navy would do thing differently, do you?

Well, there is some slight Daala/Kratas relationship forming during KJAs trilogy.

In the first, and second book, Daala hardly asks Kratas anything personal. In short he serves as her computer relay or executor.
Only in the last book, after Daala has screwed up everything, managing only to escape with worthless data, does she turn to Kratas on a personal level, asking him about his personal opinion. So, he turned from droid to model sidekick.

However, this does not mean anything. KJA propably just needed a conversation to show that Daala was still alive, and one sentence like "the ISD headed for the galactic core" would not have sufficed.

Darksaber is inconclusive in itself - on pg 68 Daala is wishing that Kratas had been more resolved when arguing against her plans (when did that ever happen, KJA?), and she is still treating him like a expendable sidekick, or a student. A few pages later, she has to fight tears because he is dead.

So I blame KJA's bad writing.

Then again, Daala is always falling in love when her life sucks...
cantina duty --> Tarkin
renegade imperial --> her old love , whats his name - starts with L, iirc.
one might develop a pattern here.

SO it may be possible, but I don't think so.
